Hi everyone,
This isn't a question its a tale. So settle down with a
and read on.
I've had the 1100GS (1999) for 18 happy months
. Best bike yet, however, I noticed that the end
of the exhaust was black with soot and so was the number plate and left indicator
So at the 24k service I asked Jap and German to check it out. They replaced the CO potiometer and tried to get the mixture right. After a lot of miles and fiddling with the factory settings on the throttle bodies it was certainly running well but fuel consumption was a terrible. 150 miles to a tank maximum
.
J&G thought I might need new throttle bodies at £500 so I left it for a while to see if I could sell one of the kids
or something. Finally saved up the dosh and thought I would see if Prestige agreed with J&G. I booked the bike in and only discovered afterwards that it was Prestige 's last day of trading. I don't think they were much in the mood to take on a difficult job. They reassured me that the throttle bodies were OK for another 10k. So what to do. It was still smoking like a chimney and using fuel at an expensive rate. Great to ride but tough on the pocket.
I have seen the many (many) posts by Steptoe on this site and thought I would see if he would put his gargantuan brain on this problem. Booked the bike in for two weeks ago. Took a while to get there and even longer to get to work as there was no courtesy bike
The man was not hopeful but he set up the CO thingy again and the TPS. This reduced the smoking a lot.
Steptoe was not sure he had done much but suggested I replace the righthand fuel injector next if there was no improvement, he'd have fitted one there and then, but he didn't have one in stock at the time. My righthand injector wasn't giving the right voltage.
The bike ran very smoothly after that but the fuel consumption over the following week was only a little better. So I took the great man's advice and bought a second hand replacement bit for £24 quid from motoworks.
The box arrived two days later
and it took 20 minutes to fit. I did 500 miles over last weekend and got 200 to each tank of fuel. The plugs are a much better colour and the bike is much less vibby. It even seems to warm up faster
. It's like having a new bike!!
So more praise and glory to the man.
. I hope I get a chance to buy him a beer
Steptoe has only ever seen one GS with this problem before so we thought we should make sure that it is mentioned on this forum. Looks like it going to be a great summer. SWMBO and I are off to North Wales at the end of July, should be great fun
.
