So - has anyone tried to straighten a twisted centre stand?

Hey all,

I recently swapped out my GS centre stand for the GSA one, because my GSA side stand was fouling on the shorter GS centre stand.

whilst this has solved the issue, the bike is now rather hard to put on the centre stand and when fitting I noticed that the GSA stand is twisted, so the kick stand side of the stand sits lower than the other (when retracted/horizontal) This seems to be due to a very worn pivot on the bike it came from and hard use poor/maintenance. Its fitted well with no play in the pivot on my original mounting bushes.

So has any one ever tried to straighten a twisted stand? I presume with heat, - does it work or will they just crack?

It's at present just minor bug bear, but over time its gonna become more and more of pain ... and the bloody thing was impossible to get on the centre stand at the garage to fuel up.

so any thought would be appreciated.

:)

Or..
From using the centre stand legs as a pivot to spin the bike around..

I used to do that and had to replace the stand

Of course it was. You’ve got the shorter standard GS suspension, what were you expecting :D

Actually Steptoe - the bikes been retro fitted with GSA shocks. (hence the GSA side stand because the lean was too keen with the old GS one)

So its slowly becoming a GSA with the GS gear box/ and smaller tank - a more road touring focused machine with gravel road capabilities.

The stand is a pain simply because the pivot point across the two feet is not inline with the bikes axis, and the foot plate is worn down at the rear - likely because as Old rat said - pivoting the bike on the centre stand ... (the GSA one came from 2004 bike - but the pivot was well buggered)

Edit - so after a little digging it would seem my rear shock is GS not GSA - (B0172 not B0352) didn't measure it when it was off bike getting serviced, so don't know eye to eye length, but hey hoo. (I was told they had been swapped by previous owner but it would appear this may not have been 'entirely' accurate)

Either way - problem still 'stands'. The side stand side (left when on bike) leg of the centre stand is hitting floor earlier than the other, right, side. So its making the change in leverage that would come from the longer stand even worse...

straightening the twist would potentially put things back to on par..

Now gonna go off and grumble about the service cost of a rear shock that was shorter than I thought. And the purchase price of two actual genuine, GSA shocks for front and rear.

but whatever - it still rides nice.

Mad hatter - ta muchly, but I have a clean and straight standard GS one in the parts bin, which I took off to fit the GSA one because the spring didn't fully retract it, and the longer GSA side stand fouled it when in retracted position.

if anyone has a good straight GSA one I'd be interested, as I've converted the mounting brackets and under tray to all GSA, and will be doing the shock conversion over winter, with a new screen and then the (dreaded) clutch swap for the longer spine unit. (I'll be keeping the GS shocks in the same parts bin that the GS stand is in)

At which point Bertha will be ready for another 75,000 miles of smiles. - she is a permanent member of the family now. :)

If it turns out that the twisted GSA can't be fixed I may take you up on the offer Mad hatter... because there could be a 2 stands into 1 welding solution there.
