and was presented with a bill for nigh on £300 for a 6000 mile service. A bit more than I was expecting !!

and they didn't even clean it !!

I'm soo looking forwards to the 12,000 mile service...NOT

Welcome to the world of BMW excess !. Excess cost.

Yes, and when my extended warranty expires next month and partly because of the servicing costs I wont be renewing.
Self-service for me from now on.
However even the parts prices are scary. I have been pricing parts for a soon to be due 24k service.

Castrol 10W50 @ circa £55 for 4 litres. Twincam plugs @ circa £44 for 4.

T'internet is definitely your friend - I'll be using Elf 10W50 fully synthetic @ less than £30 for 4 litres.

I know its not much help to you at present when its under warranty - but it should get cheaper.
[ and probably better when you're doing it yourself !]

I use the oil from lidl 15w40 11 quid a gallon same oil from aldi as well used it for a long time ,oil way overpriced or try carlube from b&q very good on price and its uk made .

Halfords sometimes have good deals on oil. Lidl is the best deal I've seen in a long time. JJH

I like the prices but unfortunately for my RT the recommended is 10W50 fully synthetic.
I had a look at the PETRONAS website and the Syntium 800 is for cars. Is Lidl's the same ?

They do make a Syntium Moto 4SP for bikes which fits the spec which I found at £12.49 PER LITRE [ plus carriage ] - almost Castrol prices.
How far away from the recommended spec is it safe to stray ?

If you have a pre WC bike with a dry clutch it is to all intents a car engine. Special bike oils are usually intended for wet clutch applications. Look at the spec in the handbook and just make sure whatever you buy is the same.

I asked Castrol a few months ago for their recommendation, & had a really comprehensive reply back.

The tech. chap said he personally wouldn't use a 40 grade oil in the Boxers.

He also said that he thought a fully synthetic oil was overkill in the UK, which is generally cooler than many other parts of Europe, let alone the rest of the world.

He recommended Power 1 15W-50, for all my bikes which range from a 1979 R100 to a (last of the air-cooled) 2013 R1200. It does make life simpler, keeping just one oil in my garage

Just had mine done - 6000 mile service and 2 new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 GT tyres - £790..... including £313 for the tyres and fitting. Reassuringly expensive. I particularly enjoyed the £77 for Castrol 15/50 Race oil...

BTW the new Michelins are fantastic. Very pricey, but they are very grippy and progressive and the bike is much more steady - much better than the OEM Bridgestones ever were...

Just put 2 new tyres on my 2013 RT at 8700 miles.
BT023 GT. £300 supplied / fitted by dealer, I bought from tyreleader.co.uk £180, £10 fitting & balancing to each loose wheel at a local shop. (Less than 1 hours work to remove/refit wheels).
Saved £100, took 1 hours work, so I earnt £100/per hour! Result.
BT 023 GT is a better tyre than the BT 021 originally fitted. Makes the bike far more stable and 'planted' on the road.

I just had a pair of Continentals, at £188 inc fitting. Took the wheels of myself and won't be using dealer again, much nicer. Mobile tyre fitter who is also a biker.

:D
Not to mention how much quicker it feels with the lighter wallet

It's be the same for a Japanese bike, more if it was fully faired..... fancy owning a Ducati with desmodromic valves?

You need to get a GS1200LC. I just had the 6000 service at Allan Jefferies in Shipley. I used one oil voucher (£90 for four oil changes) and the cost including VAT was £64.00.
Got a full report sheet, book stamped and the rear pads replaced under warranty.

got my "new to me" R1200RT 06 booked in for annual service, bike has only done 3k since last service stamp but that was a year ago, so to be safe am going to Vines in Guildford to make sure it's done and get the stamp. I have the extended warranty and emergency cover as well but they don't stipulate it has to be a BMW dealer anymore as long as the service plan is followed. Have heard Vines are a good dealer but not sure on prices!!! taking a cardiac machine with me just in case!
