What are the alternatives to the gs?

I've had a ktm 990 adv and not only did that have a few problems, but I didnt warm to it either. I've tested the tiger 800 and thats a decent alternative - ok it lacks some of the bells and whistles but makes up for that by being less lardy. And its the lard that would rule out the explorer for me.

The ducati is really an adventure styled sports bike and in any case would you really buy a ducati over a bmw on reliability and quality? Ditto guzzi, ditto aprillia.

What about the crosstourer? Anyone tried one?

Got a CT & like it, long term issues are another matter, though there is good potential based on past reputation, try the DSG version:thumb

I wouldn't say it's carp but it's certainly bass,unless this thread is a red herring ?

stop acting the cod and answer the OPs question.

OP I think BM quality if fine, sounds as if you may have got a bad GS which is a bit of a fluke really :D:D

I love BMW bikes - I've had so many it's embarrassing :pullface

I had some bad issues with a K100 RS 16v I had new in 1992 but all the others have been great.

All vehicles wear and some go wrong, what counts is the resolution of the issue and I think BMW are generally at the top of their game.

I guess we mostly only hear only the bad news on these Forums.

Having said all that it's reassuring to run Beemers that are still in warranty:Motomartin

Somebody should move this to the Pub

ALL Bikes are built to a budget.

Pay about £12K and you will end up with a £12K bike. Some manufacturers put less gizmos and spend the munnee on better quality parts (in some area).. . then you might pay a bit more for "premium" brand. . but you would generally recoup that money on resale value (it makes BMWs cheap, if you count residules)

BMW suspension is shocking :blast
Switch gear is good

So in answer to the OP - depends where you want the money spent, whether Italian design is worth more to you than Bavarian agriculturalnessness??

Really you can only answer that Q yourself. If there were a simple answer only one bike model would ever get sold every one would buy a bmyamondsakiapriva. simples.

If I were to leave BMW, it would be for either a Multistrada, or an 1190R. I'd be more concerned about the reliability of the Ducati, as there are many reports out there of issues (admittedly, on forums), and I'm bound to get shot down in flames for this, but there's something about the KTM that I can't quite put my finger on. I want to like it more than I do, but it's just not doing it for me (yet).

Same for me - love the idea of them, but would never really consider having one. But I dont really know why:nenau

So, you've come on the 1200 section, told us all our bikes are fish and now you want us to tell you what to ride? I think you should get the Honda, you deserve each other:barf

He's just trawling for information he can't be bothered to find elsewhere and caught everyone hook, line and sinker....;)

If you are going to reject the Explorer because it's too lardy, bear in mind that the Honda CT is even heavier (and heavier still if you go for the auto).
