So what do I need to build a new PC?

OK, it looks like my old PC has bit the dust big time. The mother board appears to be f'cked due to a non-functioning fan but as far as I can work out the drives are OK.

I've decided that I could build a new one. I've got the disk drives, network card, sound card , keyboard, mouse, VDU, firewire and video card, dvd reader, CDRW, floppy disk drive.

So what do I need?

A new motherboard, power supply and case I'd guess.

Any suggestions as to where to buy them (ebuyer?) and what else I might need or what else am I forgetting? Can I just use my existing drives without loading a new operating system?????? Do mother boards come with memory?

Cheers

Dick

Can buy bundles from the likes of www.overclockers.co.uk - gives you a new motherboard, memory and processor all guaranteed to be compatible for the less geeky amongst us ;)

Could replace the power supply on it's own but cases with supplies already installed are relatively cheap.

You can buy a pretty decent PC at a good price of eBay, and then add your left-over bits to it. That's what I did - I bought an Athlon 3500+ CP with a decent graphics card (ATI 9800) and 40Gb disk, then added my wLAN adaptor, Firewire adaptor and old disk from my old PC into it. All works fine, and I have a darned fast PC into the bargain.

Otherwise, you'll need a motherboard & processor. Lots of snags in this area getting the right processor for the board, and enabling all your bits to run off the board.

For lots of knowledge, the best site is

www.tomshardware.com

Dick,

You may get away with only a new motherboard.

Depending on the age of the "donor" PC, the case and power supply should be re-usable. Also memory (motherboards don't come with this!) may be OK.

Existing drives should work too although you will spend some time "inserting original discs" as differences in the hardware are identified on power up.

If you intend re-using the CPU, check that it is compatible with the motherboard. (This goes for memory as well).

Dick,

There is a Maplin store in Brighton (London Road). Pop in and talk to them, they are very helpful people and will sell you as much or as little as you like.

a book could be written on this subject, but for starters, i'd never deal with ebuyer again & i'd think twice about buying from overclockers.

personally never had any grief from OC but then i've not had to return anything. they stock good stuff at cheapish prices, but read reviews here

tekheads for me or CCL & i've had a bit of grief with CCL!

very rewarding building your own pc i find. too much to say about the subject here, but i'm in brighton [well, wessons] on saturday & would be happy to meet up again & talk it over.

just a thought. if the fan's malfunctioning, why not just fit a new fan?

oh yes, dell are just sooo common don't you know? :D

And chuffin expensive for a high end machine.

I like THESE PEOPLE quite a lot...I might well be looking for a new machine very soon and I'm drawn towards them ;)

Can't fault Mesh either.......apart from their pricing again on the high end stuff.

I'm very reluctant to admit this, but I've also been quite impressed with Tiny for pricing in the mags recently as well.....they used to have shit reviews and customer services but if they've changed, they do lok good on paper.

WTF am I saying!!

Tiny???

Never!!!

More than happy to meet over at Wessons. What time?

No point in replacing the fan as the cpu is fried (according to my repair man - although he could be wrong - a 2nd opinion is being sought). That's why I'm
looking at a new motherboard and re-using my disks and cards.

Cheers
