So where do i start?

I’d go to a small island - they’re always a breath of fresh air. I was in Oban yesterday and really wanted to jump on the ferry to Mull, but something held me back………..oh yeah, it was wifey texting me insistently!!
Did you ride the A816 - the best biking road in the UK IMO

1. When do you plan on going?

2. How long do you plan to be away for?

3. Where do you plan on going?

4. What do you think is a decent (reasonably comfortable) day’s ride in the UK? Give us the number of miles and time duration, please, front door to front door.

I’m still none the wiser on these ‘Where to start’ questions. I am not even sure if the OP wants to travel (ie go) abroad or wants something here in the UK?

Yeah and shhh 🤫 lol
Went Glencoe to Oban (Connel Bridge) and then to Inveraray. Know it’s touristy, but stopped at Loch Fyne for some mussels on way home 😎
Some lovely riding round there. I would be there far more often but it's a long slog from Dorset. I stayed in the George in Inveraray last time I was there, rode down to Mull of Kintyre one day and, yes that bloody tune was with me before I even got on the bike. Langoustines in garlic butter at the George was excellent too.

For the OP, perhaps a ride to Moffat, a stay for a few nights at the Buccleuch Arms and do some of their day rides would be a nice start. No need to overload the bike or rider, no need for ferries, vignettes or lengthy slogs down peages. Keep it simple. Don't overdo it, just relax and enjoy. Bigger trips can come later.

Not been travelling on a bike since the rise of the internet really, before having kids. now they have gone got myself a 1250 and looking to travel again but where do i start?...I want to plan ahead , are there any websites i can use or this any books i can read . i feel like a novice all over again at 65

Moved from Trip Reports.

What did you decide on in the end?

You’re pretty much in one of the very best riding areas in the country. Try having a few days riding from home each day. Sort of a tour without touring. This will let you experience riding day after day as on a tour. I have around 40 day rides around the dales saved on Basecamp and usually either just pick one or send one to the lads I know if they want an idea for a day out.IMG_0198.jpeg

prefer e-usk on Oban pier - or the green shack if it's open.....

a816 is one of our lunch runs to Oban, we are blessed with some cracking roads up here - head down to South Ayrshire for some belters..

From a touring perspective - go practice the big days out - multiple hours in the saddle if you're not as bike-fit as you should be. We routinely take an airbnb somewhere up North (proper North, not Yorkshire) and then run out in a different direction each day. This year we took a place just over the Skye Bridge - Days out via Applecross to Gairloch, a day of touring Skye itself etc - plus the riding there and back... all good experience
