Hi

RIDE magazine tested soft panniers and suggested Frank Thomas Cargo Endurance Sports. Has anyone fitted these or another set of soft panniers to an 800gs. I am bit concerned about fitting over the exhaust?

Thanks.

sorry:hide

Quite a few of the boys on advrider swear by these panniers and some of the lads with 800GSs have fitted them.

Much better made and more durable than any Frank Thomas gear but they dont hold a massive amount of kit so may be too small fo what you want .

Thanks Rushy.

I use a ventura system so this was to compliment that for say a week long trip so size wouold not matter too much. Do you know if any adaptation is required for the LH bag over the exhaust or can they just be thrown over the back of the bike?

Interesting approach but at £300 a tad expensive but there again flexible. Any 800gs tosser have one of these and if so what do you think?

I'm not sure TBH but I think you could just throw them over . Best to ask on advrider perhaps re:the 800. I think that you can also buy some simple rails that sort of keep the bags slightly away from the sides of the bike / rear wheel. A lot of of guys sometimes something rudimentary themselves.

Those for sale are mounted on a KTM 950se with twin , very hot, akrapovics with nor problems.

For what it's worth I've just ridden 17000 miles on my own LWRound (on a 800gs) 5000 to go and I'm using a speedpack wide by bags connection can't recommend enough. Holds 80 to 100 ltrs waterproof in the most extreme conditions and has held together better than the panniers fitted to every other bike. (12 bikes in total).

Hi Rex800,

I know it's almost a year after your post, but I'm interested in the saddel bag you have (had) from bag-connection.

You are (were) obviously pleased with it, but how do you keep the bag clear from the exhaust from the 800GS?

Thanks for any info, or maybe a pic or two!

Kind regards,
Gert

Have a look at Andy Strapz stuff. I don't know if there is a distributer in the UK but his panniers are great as are the rear bags. The pound is worth heaps more than the OZ dollar so it should be good for you. He is a straight-up bloke and touring rider so he should be able to help.:Motomartin

We had a few sets of throw over panniers which we tried on the F650 without a supporting frame, all of them hung funny and loaded up the side panels and touched the exhaust. We fitted the SW Mocech frame to support them but the width is excessive.

We finally purchased a set of slim 21L givi panniers, they hold enough for a two week trip when combined with a saddle bag and top box.

hey there,
any chance you could show us a pic of the givi's mounted from the rear of the bike please?:aidan

I have a set of Ortlieb motorcycle panniers slung over a SW Motech Trax rack. There are no issues with exhaust heat and they have done the best part of 20 thousand miles. They are 100% waterproof. I have crashed them off road and all in all I'm pleased with them. The other advantage is... they are light.

The existing velcro is not wide enough to meet over the 800's wide arse but I solved this by buying some extra velcro and bridging the gap. :D
