I need to upgrade our home PC to Windows 7, and probably time to do the same with MS Office 2003!

My daughter is 16 and now at 6th form college and it seems to me she qualifies for the student editions of these upgrades. The savings are eye-watering; £33.00 for Windows 7 Premium and a similar price for Office 2010 (from Software4Students).

Am I missing something? Is there a catch?

No catch as far as I know - I've got one or two PC thingies bought under same scheme

Most are now labelled - Student, Parent, and Teacher Edition......

There's no catch. The only limitation is that they are intended for non-commercial use.

They've got good deals really. I've got stuff through them as I'm going through my OU at the moment so I'm classed as a student (although the wife's a lecturer so we'd be covered anyway).
Only 'catch' is that you have to be a student / teacher to hold the licence. Once you stop education the licence expires.
How the software will ever know on the other hand....

Check with the college - some may be able to offer the software even cheaper. I'm at Cardiff Uni and we just had an email about a number of software packages they have at very low prices.

No problem with softwaare4students - long established used by my fellow students without problems

Fantastic

Fantastic discounts for Windows 7 and Office. It is a trust system, and they don't require you to jump through hoops to attain the discount.

Microsoft probably not happy, but they make all their money with commercial licensing, and are probably just happy that you will have a licensed version of their software. Also, although these are "Upgrade" editions (meaning, you will need to have Windows XP/Vista on already), they are better than the "OEM" versions (that comes with a new PC - the license terms are far less strict and you are allowed to upgrade the hardware on your PC).

Also, MS Office licensed for two PC's, which is a nice touch. Don't expect any fancy packaging though, its a DVD in a small plastic wallet in a jiffy bag, but pukka MS product.

I cannot recommend these guys enough.

Thanks everyone

I've taken the plunge and gone for a copy of Windows 7 and Office 2010.

On the basis that I'm going to have kids over the age of sixteen in full time education for about the next 10 years I don't think there's too much chance of me breaching the licence and I guess it will indoctrinate them to MS until such time as they can afford to consider the Apple alternative!:augie

good call on going Win 7 / Office 2010 especially if you are upgrading from Vista.......suggest that you do a reformat and then install from new however as the upgrade path isn't the cleanest.

Just remember to back up your stuff before you install.

Good luck
