Afternoon chaps, here's a few photos of my recently acquired 80g/s. I've already posted a question about my leaking carbs (now sorted) but I need to tap into your combined expertise again if you don't mind on the following....

1/ I need to change the battery and assume the only way to do this is by removing the rear shock. Is the rear spring 'under pressure?' I.e. If I take out the top bolt will the spring expand and require a special tool to refit?

2/ As you can see, the front mudguard had been mounted wrong (low position). I need to either repair or replace it (did submitted a wanted request for this but no joy yet). Does anyone know what size/type the four mounting screws/bolts are that screw into the bracket below the headlight? Also, I take it there must be some sort of spacers involved to allow an adequate gap for the headlight cabling to pass between the mudguard and the bracket?

3/ The fork gaiters are perished but I won't attempt to replace these myself as it looks a bit of a job to take the forks off. I will however source them myself before I take it in. Any idea how much for a pair or will a 'cheaply' pair of a suitable size off eBay suffice?

Thanks

Nice bike! Gaiters should be easy enough: remove caliper and secure, remove wheel, drain fork oil, undo retaining nuts for fork slider (recessed into bottom of slider), slide sliders off at the bottom of the stanchions, remove gaiters and replace. Reverse.

Nice bike...:thumb2
Motor works do the gators... cant remember the prince, but not expensive.

BTW, you have ST rear rack and pannier frames.... G/S ones were black originally.

Ride safe

What they said ^^^^

You could also try looking at Motobins website for parts.

Also, you don't seem to have a fork brace fitted.

Personally I would buy the gaiters from BMW, I had a pair from MW and they split within weeks :nenau check the price of them at BMW they are not expensive. You can still get the g/s front mudguard too.
Nice bike.... enjoy :thumb2

I've got a pair of black original hand guards you might want for £25 posted :augie

You will be surprised at how much BMW stock for your bike.....although not always necessarily the best option. A quick question, I am assuming the mudguard was attached to some sort of fork brace the bolted to the upper part of the lower fork housing. I only say this as I saw a g/s the other day with no fork brace....not good for long term health.

Cheers

Yes, the mudguard was attached to the fork brace which I've taken off to re-paint. I'll ring motorad Chester for a price on the mudguard and gaiters, if stocked.... Thanks

I will be using these to space my mudguard out

not sure on the bolts, but I think they are M6, and would need to be about 20mm, I can check tomorrow

If you take the top bolt out, the wheel will drop to the floor if it's on the centre stand, you just need to lift the wheel up and guide the shock back :thumb

Thanks for the advice. I'd be very grateful if you could check the size of those bolts and I'll get some ordered. Good find on the spacers thanks

Thanks for the advice, sounds easy enough but I'll probably leave it to a mechanic to fit, more of a 'rider & polisher myself tbh!!

Just one more question.... in relation to the last photo of the mudguard, what's your opinion on whether the holes will take a filling? I'm guessing they won't as the flexing in the plastic will cause the filler to crack. Any thoughts?....

Worth getting a new one. Otherwise you're always going to know the holes are there and checking to see what ever fix is still there. :thumb2

Boxxerparts.de are a good source of parts....they sell the Ascerbis mudguard for about £35.

I put a polisport universal on mine and I think it looks the business. It was less than £20 too......have a look on the basic photos and you'll see it.

I had the bolts out today. As standard they are m5 x 12mm long, but mine are 18mm or 20mm long as I have nylon spacers above the mudguard to give the loom some room and penny washes below to support the mudguard better. I've just clicked the link above and ordered shiny new white spacers tho, as mine are a bit less pretty.:D

Mine never had a fork brace, so I am going to have to make one, anyone got the dimensions

Early ones didnt originally. All this talk of fork braces can be a bit of a bum steer , yes if you have the correct type, and yes if they are fitted correctly they can improve the stability of the fork marginally, but often they actually make the fork action noticiably worse. I have spent an enormous amount of time and money (and I truly mean enormous) on "improvements" to the weedy g/s fork, ive left mine off as I much prefer the action and can live with it being slighty less stable. If you really feel you must have a fork brace I suggest that you find a genuine BMW one as they are about the best of the bunch.
