Some things I have learnt, and some advice I'd like

You're right, it sat in his garage under a cover all it's life, only went on one trip. The lad had to buy a new battery so he could sell it ! He kept it in test though, and the MOT's show a sorry story of mileage just to the testing station each year. I assured him it will get about a bit more now mind :D

Am I the only person that finds the stock seat perfectly fine? Just back from a trip where we were doing 6 - 8 hours of riding per day for 8 days and no issues at all :nenau

no your not, theres thousands of 1200's out there with stock seats mine included, my seat went "off" at about 90k took me a while to figure out that it was the seat, thought it was my arse playing up 1st,replaced with a low mileage stock seat, now all good again:thumby:


when I had my 1200 new the seat gave me jip, i adusted it underneath and no trouble since.
 
I could not get on with the GSA seat. Too hard and too high. The GS seat seemed to have a lump just under my coccyx so I ended up with a Kahedo standard height. It's a bit hard but well shaped and good for 200 miles non stop. The next taller Kahedo is more comfortable but too high for me.

Those who have them say the top mod is a Hilltop remap closely followed by Wibers suspension.
 
The Ilmberger is better than most but dirt and water from the wheel hits the TUV shovel (spray guard) and bounces forwards into the low pressure area around the wheel above hugger and shock then out onto riders legs and everything else. The 4" gap between hugger and shovel is the main culprit.
Remove the shovel fit a number plate mudguard extender and the bike stays a lot cleaner. A Mudsling keeps the shock spotless and reduces space for dirt to throw out sideways.
For a while I had an Ilmberger hugger, Mudsling and removed spray guard. Removing the hugger made no difference to the dirt situation.
To prove the point gaffa tape some HGV inner tube rubber sheet between hugger and TUV spray guard it looks pants but the bike stays a lot cleaner.

I think you missed the phrase "To prove a point...". He was experimenting to find out where the problem lay. It seemed to work, job done, it wasn't intended to be a permanent fixing.

In Yorkshire and I have an MRA Vario tinted that you are welcome to try - it's good but I think I prefer the standard with a Touratech spoiler on it but I am only 5'9".
Only bought it off here a few weeks ago and will prob sell on . Try it if you like..

Mine is an ADV so has the ADV taller screen with a laminar lip. No buffeting, quiet and I can ride at motorway speed with my visor open if I want.

Mine is a 2006 so no ESA, still got a standard front shock but have got a custom Maxton rear. Build quality second to none and it transformed the bike. It's incredible how quick it goes on country lanes now.

As regards the seat, I have had a gel insert put in but as I have plenty of padding on my backside already I can put up with it. I'm used to it now.

Yet another disclaimer writing apparachnik who needs to get a grip.

A bit of rubber sheet or to prove where the dirt escapes from between hugger and splash plate will do no harm what-so-ever. My original post never suggested its a permanent fix.

The dirty bike and rider issue is caused by the rear wheel not having a mudguard and a spray plate that aggravates the issue. Adding a hugger that leaves a huge gap to the spray plate is never going to solve the problem.
