I heard the other day…..

that the Alternator for the 1150GS was the same as one from a Series 3 BMW car?

And so is the starter motor!

This actually means that if either of these go wrong, you can take them to any auto electrician and have them reconditioned very quickly for around £70…… a new alternator from BMW is £700!

Let me know if you find out this is bullsh*t

My tame Auto-elec mate can recondition both for a reasonable amount. Starter motor is common to many cars, apparently.

In all the time I've been on this board I've only heard of one alternator failing and that was a bearing that failed.

I had a K75 alternator fail in France. The French auto electrician fixed it using Fiat parts.

Over the years many parts are from the cars - of course any auto electrician can rewind the generator / starter even if they are bike specific. I understand that the crank from the old air heads shared dimensions with their cars.

Just look at the specs on the alternator, it would never power a whole car!

And the starter is made in Poland if I'm not mistaken, Valeo is the brand, and it could possibly start a small engined car, like small japaneese cars... I don't think BMW are the only to use it!

But likely not a BMW three series, but who knows, the boxers are tough as hell to turn! Just try to run start it!

Fuel pump on the 1100's was the same unit as used on the 3 series petrol cars..

so the AA man told me :nenau

and.......:augie

how much

Door handles

The door handles on a Morris Marina are the same os those fitted to a Rolls Royce. Now that could really save you some serious dosh!!:D;)

The front lights of the Lambourghini Diablo is the same as the Nissan 300ZX!

It even is a Nissan mark on them!

If you don't believe me, i'll take them off my Lambo and show you:aidan

if it valeo then it could be a small french car the starter of r100 airhead is off a peugot 306 with a differant end housing i think (read it somewhere):rob

Now someone is getting there :thumb

Valeo is used on many peugeot and citroen cars.

Don't know which bits are interchangeable and I don't know whether I'd bother taking the risk of getting it wrong as these things change all the time and have very small subtle differences to the casings etc.

I always new Morris Marina cars were class!, my father brought one when they first came out, got it home, parked up, and on returning to the car could not open the doors!. Some of the nylon rods between the handles
and the actual loks had pulled out!. Good old British Leyland, why arn't they still in business!!. Seriously try putting a post on the BMW club site, Mike Fishwick auto electrics man exstrodinair wrote an artical in the club journal about started motors and a lot of bmw bikes/ peugeot cars are the same. Made by "Vario" cheap from car breakers. Put a post on here and see what happens.

I think that you'll find 1961 Land Rovers (proper Land Rovers!) had Dynamos and not alternators. Ex WD may be different, but these would be BIG. )radio equipment etc).

This info is already posted ( try a search), thats where you may have read it. - The internals are the same, the case mounts are different. But you can swop the internals from case to case.

Also, the screen motor on the K1100 is the same as a peugeot electric window motor.

BMW k1100 price = £180
Peugeot window motor price = £40 ( late 90's prices, when i last fitted one)

Errr... I wasn't being serious :blast

To be fair though I did say generator, not alternator. Generator/dynamo are same thing (right?), both have windings that spin inside a fixed magnetic field, alternators have a magnetic field spun inside fixed windings (in very simple terms). At least thats what I always understood :nenau I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong :augie

Not that it matters, Landie (Vera :D) was converted to -neg earth and alternator a long time ago :thumb2
