I dinged my oil pan above 10,000ft here in the mountains of Mexico the other day and was a couple of hundred kms from home. My riding partner was a visiting rider from Arizona who spotted the leak. I cleaned off the oil pan with my alcohol hand gel and got it spic and span, he then pulled out a 3M tape product from his panniers and we applied two small pieces overlapping to cover the ding. This stuff held immediately, we waited a few minutes and no leak. We dropped down off the mountain, still no leak. At a gas stop an hour later still dry as a bone. Headed home with stretches over 160kmh in high heat and humidity, still no leaks after 2 hours. It has been a week and the tape is still holding and doing its job like a champ! The tape is rated for 90c but has an emergency rating to 130c which I think is about as hot as the oil pan will get but I never measured the running temp of the oil pan.

It is like the Keef Richards of tapes.

3M Scotch 2228 professional grade moisture sealing tape will get you home.

you know when you have something that is so good that you wish everyone had some, just to share the love.......
That's your story...thanks for sharing

Mike, Firstly Glad all is well, and you got out of what could have been a huge problem if not detected early :beerjug:

This alcohol was it tequila based? if so and your to Patten a fixing kit it could be the Tequila Slapper :friday :nenau , like a mupet :D :D :D

Do you have a bash plate fitted ?

Never thought of the tequila! Good point. Over here it is easier to find cane liquor as it is harvest time in the sugar fields.
No bash plate, just an oil filter and heat exchanger protector.
Usually, the centerstand takes the hit, but not this time.

3M Scotch 2228, quite expensive for that once in a million (read not often) incident. I guess if there was a big group it could make the list. Would gaffer tape had done the fix? JB weld? Spearmint gum?

Suprisingly, yes it will as will JB weld or similar if you can get it clean enough:thumb

I carry liquid metal for that type of incident. I ran my patched Tenere clutch cover for over 1500km before getting back to the UK.

My friend Peter had a radiator leak whilst in the middle of nowhere in Morocco and took the locals' advice to use paprika. Mix a tablespoon full in a litre bottle of water, shake it all about, let it settle, then fill the radiator with the clearer liquid from the top. Worked a treat.

I see someone on Amazon is selling the 50mm wide tape at £38.16 for 3 metres, whereas you can buy the 25mm x 3m tape from Farnell at £8.37 plus VAT.

.

Same as the old trick of using mustard powder but not sure if an egg would really work:D

JB Weld would have been my first choice, if I had it.
But seeing how well this stuff works and sticks, I am glad the other rider had it with him and shared it. I had thought, briefly, of using one of my tubeless tire "worms" and some tape, but I didn't have to go that route. For me, it's a bargain at the price you can get it at in the 1st world.
