Aye, I know it's not Scotland but has anyone any recommendations for somwhere to stay on the way south, roughly Carlisle area?
On the way south Friday evening to get the ferry to Santendar on Sunday next week so should get about that far before dehydration kicks in
Basic Inn with a bar and food would be grand, not anything fancy

Cheers

Northern,

I stayed here, but in the opposite direction on the way back up to Haggis Land:

Metal Bridge Inn - Todhills Blackford
Todhills Blackford
Carlisle
Cumbria
CA6 4HD

01228 674044

It has nice rooms, and it is also a pub and very close to the motorway turn off

Not sure about the price - but I think it was around the £60-70 quid mark b&b

Do folk actually stay in the Eskdale these days? Maybe it's improved since I lived in Langholm....:nenau

The Graham Arms in Longtown is used a fair bit by some folks on here......

It must be ok, there'd be no other reason to go to Longtown which is a godforsaken one horse town of a place.

yes Eskdale under new and improved managment,
Longtown is hell on earth its even got tumble weed blowing down the high street

How long has the new management been in place? I had lunch in there with Boz and Straypuss about a couple of years ago and it wasn't particularly good.

Even worse, my ageing Welsh aunt lives there...

Whereabouts in Langholm are you Dave? My father's still there, near the school. Maybe catch up with you for a ride at some point when I'm down....?

I`m up on meikleholm brae, was out today done and lovely run around the Black Esk resevoir on forestry roads

Didn't rate the Graham Arms with it's small and uncomfortable rooms - almost as dreary as the town itself

A bit further north is the Gordon Arms Hotel (N55 30 47.0 W3 05 49.8) on the the B708/709 junction. As it's on the Southern Upland Way their dormitory is popular, as are the normal rooms. Have used it a couple of times and enjoyed both the food and hospitality. Great riding through that area too

You could do worse than the Border House in Langholm (Owner is a biker too) and you could still sample the delights of the Eskdale.

Dave...........Seen you going about and thinking I must get myself one of those ADV thingies (if only my legs were a bit longer) and join you on the forestry tracks.

P.s. I thought the Metal Bridge Inn had closed - if not its bound to be full of workers from the Cumberland Gap.

Scares the deer shitless up the woods. :mcgun

where to stay

not much help to you, but I stay with my folks or the inlaws in Annan when I'm down "home" :P so I don't really know of anywhere to recommend, but to be helpful...

if you're coming from Aberdeen are you heading down the M74 or the A7 from Edinburgh?

if the M74 there's a couple of places at Lockerbie: the Dryfesdale http://www.dryfesdalehotel.co.uk/ and the Queens hotels http://www.queenshotellockerbie.co.uk/ as well as a few B&Bs http://www.visitsouthernscotland.com/accommodation/searchres.asp?TownID=247&TownID2=247&TownID3=133

at Ecclefechan there's the Kirconnel Hall amongst others http://www.visitsouthernscotland.com/accommodation/searchres.asp?TownID=134&TownID2=135&TownID3=247

for either route...

at Gretna there's the Gretna Chase & the Cross Keys amongst others http://www.visitsouthernscotland.com/accommodation/searchres.asp?TownID=135&TownID2=135&TownID3=135

there's always the Premier Travel Inn at Kingstown, Carlisle. 100 yds off the M6 J44
