hi folks

i am a recent convert from super sports bikes , last bike gsxr 1000 , now just purchased a gs1200r 57 plate with low miles and after getting used to the handling and performance the one think that that still hurts is my ass ,

bike has standard seat , what options do i have for a more comfortable seat without spending a fortune ???????

any sensible sugestions appreciated

regards
jim

Many GSers have had the same problem. Alternatives are a Sargent or Corbin seat, Airhawk cushion or gel inserts/pads. Even after all of these have been tried it's no better for some. However, there are also many on here who don't find the seat a problem.

If you use the search link at the top you will find a lot of threads on this subject. Good luck :thumb2

theres a few threads dotted about here but some swear by sheepskin seat covers, airhawks, sergeant seats etc... just have to be creative with the search option.

I was like you, after 80 miles in the saddle my ass was begging for me to stop. i plonked on a sheep skin rug from skyeskins, lashed it on securely and i was able to ride over 400 miles from home to farnborough without being in considerable pain.

Two things here: One is that you are taking more weight on your arse than you do on a sportsbike and you'll have to just get used to that. Second, BMW seats seem to need a long time to break in, my 20000 mile old GS has a much firmer seat than the 60000 mile near identical bike I rented on holiday this year.

Did try a sheepskin on my bike (borrowed off a mate) and it did make a difference. Looked good too... Must get over to Skyeskins.

Cheap and cheerful solution is to wear padded cycling shorts – under your biking trousers, not instead of!

The sargent seat is pricey but it really works, keep an eye out on the for sale section on here and nab one quick. I did some big mile days criss-crossing about europe this year and it was superb:thumb Only buy the one if you don't do much two up:thumb

stadium cushion and a sheepskin:thumb2

My preferred option too, but my 1150gs se seat is very comfortable as it is, so I don't use it that often.

And the stadium seat can work out more expensive than an airhawk in the long run.

Just go for it

Had the same issue as you. Considered all the options and finally decided to bite the bullet and go for a Sargent. Not perfect but has transformed the pain factor such that it is no longer an issue, in other words I need to stop for other reasons fuel etc., before pain arrives. A quick stretch of the legs then I am ok for another couple of hours. I could never have done this with BMW's standard seat.

I took the view that as long as I did not damage the seat it would have a good resale value should I change the bike, therefore my real cost is competitive with an Airhawk. I did not want the hassle of faffing about with sheepskin covers and the like.

My advice is go for it it is money well spent

Airhawk is the best solution for longer trips...

Bykebitz sell them. They currently have a sale on. Not cheap for what is effectively a bum pillow, but cheaper than a replacement seat, and I would argue, more comfortable.

Best £100 I have ever spent on a bike accessory IMHO.

I bought a s/h Sargent for my VFR800 and it transformed the comfort one-up, although it was rubbish with a pillion on for some reason (foam compressed too much with the weight of the pillion  )

All four upright bikes I've owned have (R850R, Fazer 600, Craponord, R1200GS) have had uncomfy seats due to the extra weight going through the butt cheeks. Sports tourers (VFR, K1200S) put the weight though the pelvis, so their seats are comfier, but then I get shoulder and wrist ache. Overall the GS/Craponord/Fazer 600 have been the most comfy, although lagging some way behind my car :P

I have found mime to be one of the best seats BMW have done mind you I do a lot of cycling so have quite a tough arse
Cheers C'n'C

I'm tall and have used my optional high seat on the last two GS's and will use it on the new one coming:)
The high seat has the same bottom shell as standard, but is higher in the lowest part (only 20mm I believe?) That means more foam /padding where you sit most of the time, and it is easier to move forward/backward depending on driving style as it is more flat. I haven't had any buttock pain yet. Most of my driving is when on trips, at least 6hrs/day on the bike for a week

Hiya.
I went to my local tack store (Horsey things) and found a gel pad with a simulated sheep skin cover. Just done 2500 miles around europe and I think it made a differance. I will try and find the name ect.
Tom.
