Duckhams is the same as the classic oil sold in Halfords and it's already been pointed out in this thread that that oil is below the recommended spec for the boxer engine....
Maybe you should match your oil to your suit

I don't wear a twat suit Dave! The spec on the Duckhams classic matches exactly what BMW recommend....at a fraction of the price cos it ain't red

BMW recommends:

oils of API classification SF or better - Duckhams 'classic' is API SF
Engine oils of ACEA classification A2 or better - Duckhams 'classic' is ACEA A2

Now based on that, I could put a twat suit on, ride to my local BMW stealer, and pay £9 per litre for their branded 'red' stuff.....or go to my local, not wearing twat suit, and get oil that BMW recommend at £3 a litre....the choice is yours...

I was doing a web search for 20W50 as it isn't the easiest stuff to find, and stumbled across these guys. I think they might be pretty new and are based in Southampton.

Has anybody used their products before ?? I've no idea on pricing yet but might send them an email as they are local enough to warrant a ride to pick up the oil and save on postage if they are well priced.

The spec seems good enough for a GS engine (mind you, so does chip fat).

I'm now using Duckhams Classic 20/50 oil. Got 5 litres from a local shop for £15

The reason BMW stuff is so pricey, is cos they make it fashionable by dyeing it red to match twat suits

Duckhams is GREEN SHIT and no good for anything other than lubricating garden tools for winter hibernation, it should never be allowed near an internal combustion engine, I wish I could find my thesis with all the results of the oil tests I ran

Castrol, Morrison, Silkolene and even BP all make EXCELLENT 20/50 W MINERAL oils for the BMW Boxer engines both air and oil cooled all reasonably priced if you shop around [

Try this for size

I have in stock a 'Pennine' lubricant mutli grade 15-40w, use it in the Audi, Tractor, Daf,.
I have today rung their office in Sheffield and they confirm that the spec is SL they used better than SF when they started in 1989. specs have gone from SF to SL missing out SK. This costs about £1.00 liter(today) in 205 litre drums (45 gall). They confirmed that whilst it is SL it may have some addatives misssing but should be fine in the boxer. May just as well change the oil every 3000. I would not bother asking this oil to do the full 6000miles why at the price.
So oil from the non nationals can be ok if you check and even at £2.00 lktr beats the £6.00 liter of castrol. The price difference if shocking and I still find it hard to put the cheaper oil in an expensive bike when the saving could only be.

Noted Dave. I saw them. I posted a thread on oil shortly after subscribing, but got ripped to shreds. Being new to the boxer, I just wanted info on oil, that's all. Now it seems that although the oil I got meets BMW standards, people in the know say it is shit....can't win either way

Anyway, nothing against twat suits, though to save any doubt or confusion, I'm probably just gonna use the BMW oil from now on!! Annoying thing is, I went and topped the engine oil up with the 'shit green stuff' yesterday!

proff: are we supposed to believe that they've been selling their oil for god knows how long and it trashes engines? i call bullshit. again.

when was this "thesis" done? leaving aside the scientific validity of it, let's not forget that it might not be the same oil today

I don't wear a twat suit, I don't use "BMW" oils as they are mostly rebranded Castrol or similar, marked up by 100% or even more....

OILS I do know about, FoMoCo oil was actually Duckhams and it was the prime cause of Ford CVH [escort XR3 etc] black death........Where when you removed the cam cover you saw a mess of carbon residue that stunk and actually wrecked the engine eventually.....

Last case I personally saw of this "black death" was in a Mercedes Vito Taxi with 80k miles 2 years ago....
Took 3 days to get all the shit out of engine. baked on was understatement.

Guess what oil was in the 45 gallon drum in the TAXI workshop???

They now use Silkolene 20/50 semi synth and the Vito now has over 300K miles and still has a nice clean cam box

try opie oils - they have a ukgser club discount and do quality 20/50 oil at good prices. I think they've free delivery on too. Don't worry about getting ripped to shreds - happened me too. I was even advised to PM Tarka about it, which I did to my shame

Still does trash engines specially ones that work long hours, like taxis etc

Was mixed in Walsall { Aldridge ind est] I've got 3 friends who worked there in 70's 80's none of would use it in their bikes [ one worked in the laboratory ].

Sure, there will always be out-liers in any sample, but what I understood cookie to be saying is that if Duckhams really was a product that didn't work, the evidence after decades of being sold would be overwhelming - not just a few isolated cases.

Also I note that your example had 80k miles. If Duckhams didn't work, the engine would have failed at 80 miles.

I'll never understand the logic of paying £10k+ for a bike and then penny pinching on oil I'm not suggesting that people should use overpriced, over specified bike oils, but if there was a choice between say Duckhams (which I've negative reports about) and another brand (Rock Oil in my case) for a few quid more, I know which I'd use...

I buy quality oil at the best price i can get, currently IPONE and prior to that Putolene, i have used Halfords when on special.

Anyway if fuel has dropped in price so much why hasen't the bloody oil, robbin b#stards
