Didn't know Duckhams made an 'R' was it castor oil based like Castrol 'R'?

It was Duckhams copy of Castrol R. I used some in my race car in the late 70s when I couldn't get hold of any Castrol R at short notice.

Just been to Hein Gericke and bought 4 litres of 10W50 fully synth for £21. I didn't buy any Dot4 brake fluid for my ABS flush from them as it was too expensive.
I popped into my local Unipart factors (formerly Partco) to get Dot4 at a decent price and there it was on the shelf, Unipart 20W50 grade Mineral to API SF spec at £12.33 + Vat for 5 litres.
At least I now know were I can source it locally and without paying through the nose for the privilege.
If you need 20W50, find a local UNIPART auto factors.

Having read Proff's posts (and recalling the CVH 'Black Death') I'd say it isn't about the lubricating properties so much as the detergents and dispersants within the oil brand.
If the oil cannot clean the engine and keep the by-products of combustion in suspension within the oil (mostly carbon), that is exactly the symptoms Proff describes.
The by-products in suspension within the oil should be collected by the oil filter element for disposal and the clean filtered oil then supplied to the bearings. If the detergents and dispersants cannot hold the contamination in suspension until the filter does its job, all engine surfaces get coated in the by-products leading to the 'Black Death'.

I'll never understand the logic of paying £10k+ for a bike and then penny pinching on oilI'm not suggesting that people should use overpriced, over specified bike oils, but if there was a choice between say Duckhams (which I've negative reports about) and another brand (Rock Oil in my case) for a few quid more, I know which I'd use...
and i'll never understand the logic of paying outrageous sums for an oil specced higher than recommended by the manufacturers. worse, paying more for an oil of the same spec

this is the oil sold by bmw dealers for the 1200, and other R series AFAIK. not exactly cutting edge spec, is it?
CVH "Black Death" can easily be prevented by changing the oil occasionally. not something that was always done IME, though my CVH XR3 always got serviced properly and had no black death.

Yes every 10,000 miles as per service details.
Since changing to other oil,
it has done 220,000 miles more and cam box is spotless 
so any vehicle using duckhams should have a cam box full of crap then?

All I said was if faced with a choice, I'll spend another couple of quid on an oil which doesn't have a bad reputation - not really giving in to 'oil hype'

I could be wrong, but Duckhams is now a brand, not a company. The rights to the brand are owned by some company in the Far East.
