Hi

Just to ask again (and again, and again...my other nickname is garlic...) about BMW funny services policy.

I bought a second hand 1200gs and the BMW dealer where i bought it told me that my next service should be the 6000 miles. Mine has 3900, it is one year old and has the 600 miles service.
When I check in motorrad page, the service schedule, it is not clear for me if I have to go for the annual or straight to the 6000 and then yes, If I do not get the 6000 in the net 12 month, I have to go for the annual one.
That is my understanding.
So first 600, then 6000 and then annual or 12000, and annual or 24000 and ....

Am I wrong or am I wrong?

Services occur at 6000 mile intervals. So, every 6000 miles, one type of service or another should be performed.

Every second 6000 mile service will involve additional work, as some of the items are only done at 12,000 mile intervals.

Make any more sense now?
 
Some basic maintenance should be carried out every 12 months even if the bike has not done 6,000 miles during that period.

I don't have the spec for the annual service, but presume it will cover lube, greasing and verification that pads, disks, are within tolerances as well as other similar items. PB
 
Talk to your dealer - my understanding is that what was in the annual service has now been merged into the 6000 mile service or re-scheduleed altogether. So plan on 6000 mile or 12 month services whichever comes first.

Personally I change the oil every 2000 miles anyway.

But here we are. One question and three answers. And three differents.

So it does not look to me that is a very clear issue, isn`t it?.

Basically, some of us, we thing that after the first 600 we have to go for the 6000, others that even if we have not get the 6000 in one year, we have to go fot the annual anyway, and we also have the opinion that it is better to prevent so lets going to change the oil each 2000. If you have any doubt, ask your dealer who is very honest and he will not take advantage... ;)

Seriously. I have been reading about this here and in other forums, also checking in Motorrad page and still I do not get it.

My dealer, where I got the motorbike, told me to go for the 6000 without annual, but he was closing down :( so what should I do?....

I am confused... and I do not want to loose the warranty...

Why not ontact BMW customer service and get a letter from them telling you what servicing you need to keep your bike within warranty, the dealer will revert any claims back to them for authentication anyway, keep letter handy!

I suppose if you can get anything from BMW that would be best.

However, the key bit of the annual services was the brake fluid changes and BMW found after investigation that the fluid was not deteriorating as expected so they dropped that requirement. The rest of the annual bit was simply checking up if my memory serves me. But you will probably still have the old manual (as I have) which mentions the annual service. Incidentally it was my dealer who told me about dropping the key bits of 12 month service and explained they would do what remained in the 6000 mile one.

It makes sense on any vehicle to service at least once in a 12 month period since not everything is mileage dependant.

The 2000 mile is my own choice, partly because I like fiddling with the bike and partly because the oil has a hard life in an air cooled motor and oil is cheap. Doing a regular 2000 mile oil change yourself isnt going to affect any guarantee unless you forget to put the oil back, is it?
 
Was told last week by my dealer that the annual service had now been changed to 24 month's if the bike has braided hoses ?
