.....use an ordinary trickle charger like an optimiser for a 2008 (57 plate) 1200 gs without damaging the bikes electrics?

Been using an Optimate for 6+ years (not all the time) connected straight on the battery.
Still on the original battery.

I thought so but you can never be sure especially as the manual seems to want you to connect via the power socket and spend a lot on the BMW charger.
