Hi all
1. I've just fitted a pair of NN Winglets - and just about to order a new screen. Has anybody fitted a Givi screen with the NN winglets?
2. Is it normal for the shaft/transmission to make a click when the clutch is engaged/disengaged in very slow traffic - not loud? Obviously some sort of backlash but my experience has been with ultra quiet jap stuff.
3. Start the bike from cold and above the normal duff duff/whirr etc there seems to be some be some clatter (metallic/pneumatic drill sound) on the overrun - quietens when warm but never really goes? Its only done 3.7k miles. Hard to explain but sounds harsh above what seems a pretty quite engine. If it was a jap bike I would say the carbs/valve bodies need synchronising... Any ideas or is it all normal?

Thanks and Happy New Year

Hi rgv666,

I have an 05 1200 GS and I have not noticed my Bike doing No.2 or No.3 on your list.

As far as No.1 goes, I bought GSA screen and winglets.

And welcome to the site and Happy New Year.:thumb2

I just did a search and found this: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145010&highlight=Givi+screen+winglets

Here's what post No.9 says: "I put on NN Winglets and a Givi high screen. After 20 minutes arsing about with various settings I can now cruise open-faced up to 60 in relative peace and at 80 to 100 on the Mway with the iPod Audiobook audible through extra-strong earplugs. As standard, the turb and noise is just appaling and the solution I put in was about £140 well spent."

I thought I had read that some-one had done it.:)

I'd say 2 & 3 sound quite normal for BMW twins. The dry clutch and shaft drive are a bit less forgiving than a wet clutch and chain+cush drive, so you do get backlash/takeup noises. 3 sounds like it could be just the normal valve train clatter, which you hear more on these bikes as there's no watercooling jacket to muffle the sound. Or sometimes the camchains can clatter a bit...

Thanks for the excellent replies gents. Probably me just being a worrier as ever!:bounce1

I would say that the boxer format might make some rattles a bit more obvious as the heads are not hidden under the airbox / tank.

The boxers definately sound different compaired to any other format

After a lifetime of jap 4's i too worried about all the noises shakes etc of the GS:(.
After posting here about said noises the response was an overwhelming "they all do that sir!". and guess what, they do.:D:D

ride it, enjoy it and dont worry. you'll love it.

One of the observers in my local IAM group swapped a PanEuro for a 12OORT, and commented that it ran like "a bag of spanners" when new.
He was assured it would be a different bike after the run-in service by another RT owner, and it was.
Im told that the 1200's arent as rough new as the older engines.

BMW Boxer engines need approx 15,000 miles of running in. It'll be sweet as a nut after that. Except for the gearbox clatter when kicking into first, it'll always sound like a bag of spanners.
