SOS service

Well, clearly mine has not been updated, it is 021 004 040. Disappointing. Probably not worth effing about trying to get the Nav, Packtalk, iphone and bike to communicate in seamless harmony.

As to living/riding in a GSM black spot, yes, I have to put the phone on “do not automatically set time” as it does occasionally set itself to French time. Usually in the middle of the night, so the bloody alarm goes off an hour early…

Ho hum.

Have you asked the dealer to update it in the past?. Dont think they do it unlessyiu ask and give a reason why you want it updating (sos failure msg should be a good reason) , can take about 4 hrs to update apparently.

Yeah, I heard that it takes hours. I was assured that they fixed the sos issue, so I assumed they’d done an update. Well, they haven’t sent the bill yet, so we’ll see…

Shouldn't get a bill if its still under warranty and has a fault like false Sos failure message. The software update should\might fix it so no charge. Is your bike a 1250gs and less than 3 years old?? If so should have 3 year warranty so free to fix it.

Sorry, yes, you’re right, I meant the bill for the 6000m / 12month service, at which these fixes were applied.

Now waiting on the dealers to sort it, the man was most surprised when I told him that it’s still doing the emergency system failure, that the yellow triangle is now permanently lit, and there is a message on the screen. And even more surprised when he said, “well, we upgraded your bike to the latest software”, and I said, “well, I don’t think so, mine’s 021… and I understand that 022 is the latest”. “Oh dear, leave it with me”.

Apparently there is also a wiring mod.

I await the next instalment with eager anticipation…

Hope you have better luck than me. Had the same issue on my RT, the dealer did the software updates and it didn't fix it. They then had my bike for 6 weeks whilst consulting with the mothership. BMW customer (no service) were useless, 5 separate calls, not contact back at anytime. Eventually the mothership authorised a telemetric replacement and a software upload direct from Germany. Now all fixed.

Thanks Casbar, sounds like a complete PITA. I hope I’m luckier than you too!

The dealer is 77 miles away, which is not a handy “drop it off and pick up tomorrow” deal.

They lent me a Rallye while mine was in for service, and were pretty helpful, so fingers crossed.

Technology is great when it works , what happens in a few years when it all starts to go wrong , poor chap over on triumph forum with a 10 yr old tiger , fried ecu ,likely to write the bike off as needs new clocks , ignition barrel and ecu.
Now it’s great if you can afford to change every 2 /3 years and get BMW to service it. But what about the poor guy in the 2nd hand market , the bikes are getting more integrated to dealer services and software updates.
What’s the point in the shift cam , a few more horses ? , did it really need it ? , that’s never going to be a potential problem the future is it? Or that TFT screen lets water in , what price for a replacement and only accessible to the dealer.
Yamaha have hit a nerve with the t700 in simplifying things and it seems to be paying off for them with a bucket load having been sold , and no I don’t have one.

You can apply that to anything ?

Shiftcam was an EU5 reg.:thumb

I was , not specifically hitting at BMW here.

Shiftcam , I’m sure they could have made it Euro5 without it , probably would have lost 10-15 bhp though.
The point is most of these forums exist because people vent their frustration at poor design or ongoing problems with whatever make they have.
For most of the 20th century the motorbike was for the poor man that couldn’t afford a car , those days are long gone.
I’ve looked after my own motorcycles for 40yrs but this is increasingly becoming more obstructive on certain tasks.
Take my 2015 gen 2 tiger with fly by wire , the tps can’t be set by the mechanic, dealer or otherwise. Triumph’s solution ,buy a new inlet manifold with tps and butterfly motor as a complete unit factory set.£1350 , ouch.
Now before they claim euro 5 , how can Yamaha still pull off euro 5 regs on their 700 twin using throttle cables , okay no cruise control, but I have no desire to be on any roads that need cc for any length of time .
