Sound of death?????

If the tapping is many times per turn of the wheel its could be the drive shaft UJ. Easy enough to check but have an oil tray under the FD when you tip it back as oil will drain from the speedo sensor hole.

You were spot on Bendy, turned out to be wear in the drive shaft UJ, new shaft fitted.

Why are these final drives and UJs so shit? Car FDs etc go on forever without having their oil changed.

Probably because they articulate through a limited shallow angle and have very little grease during assembly in the case of the driveshafts, leading to localised wear and notchiness followed by eventual failure.

The single-sided cantilever nature of the hollow FD wheel spindle between fully sealed bearings probably leads to high surface loadings, plus the needle roller bearing of the input pinion is a little on the small side as it is subjected to high torsional and thrust loads from the crown wheel. Water ingress and corrosion can also be factors, as can seal leaks/oil loss.
