Sound on Mac.....problem?

Headphones plugged into mac and no problem as the music is heard through them but then dis connect and no sound from the mac on the speakers?

Turn off the Mac
switch on and sound is on the mac speakers again?

This continues to happen.

Any ideas

First thing I'd do is go to System Preferences/Sound and check that everything is as it should be. I know that the volume when I use headphones is different to the one set for the speakers.
