Not sure if this is the right place but I think the fault lies with the Nav5 so....

A couple of months ago my Nav5 had a brainfart in the middle of a trip - couldn't see the maps, wouldn't search (I searched for 'Spain' but Scotland was the only S option) all settings reverted to miles, feet, etc from metric

So I gave it back to the dealer who called me a couple of hours later saying 'all it needed was a reset' which I had / have my doubts about

I didn't need it for a while so only collected it recently. It needed a map update so I connected it to my new MacBook Air. Everything went swimmingly for a couple of hours into a 3+ hour update & then it got stuck at 1 hour 18 minutes. I force closed Garmin Express & restarted the Mac but once I plugged the Nav5 back in it immediately went to 1 hour 18 minutes and stayed there

So yesterday I tried it on the Mac in work. Again all appeared ok, it got to updating the maps but the little green bar never started & it's been sitting like that all day.

So, do I throw the Nav5 back to the dealer or get someone to look at both Mac's or have one of you genius' got a resolve ?

Please & thanks :thumb

There was well reported issuer with Mac and Nav 5 not seeing the SD card

I had to do a big workaround using mapinstall instead of garmin express

Have you got a windows PC to give it a go on ?

Fairly sure it's not the SD card cos it didn't give a problem when I initially loaded maps onto it. When I plug the unit in first I get the 'no compatible SD card' but if I hit retry it always finds it. Then Express does it's 'preparation' phase and it's only when it gets to the 'map update' part that it fails. I'll get another SD card & try it, sure I've nothing to lose

Yep, there's a PC at home with Mapsource but it'll need Express won't it ? I didn't want to use that as I decided I'm going to learn BC (on the Mac) this year (even if it kills me !) but that's not a bad idea, at least it'll rule in or out the Macs :thumb

You can run basecamp on the PC and garmin express, scrap mapsource

I think that the problem i and others were having was due to an update garmin did with a bit missing they have now fixed that.

How big is the SD card you are using as bigger than 32gb and I dont think it works

Another tip is to do the updates seperately I.E do the computer update then the device

I'm trying to get away from Mapsource ! But, after using it for years, I haven't managed to get my head around BC properly.
So this year I bought a MacBook Air for my travels (Windez laptops just don't seem to last) and already have a Mac in the office so it's time to concentrate on Nav5 / BaseCamp & Mac. I don't have the head for Mapsource & PC as well

SD card is 32gb

I'll see if I can find where to do separate updates. I don't yet have the maps on either the Mac or the Air so that might prevent me from updating. But we'll see...

Garmin fixed the problem with getting the updates done on a Mac.

I would suggest that you make sure that your Garmin Express is the latest version and then try again. I run GE on a Macbook Pro and it recently updated the Nav V and my laptop (for use in Basecamp) with no issues

Probably a stupid question but where do I see what version my GE is ? And where do I find what version they're at currently ?

If the fault continues remove & reinstall GE & do a hard/master reset on the device.

And I'm only after redoing all the settings that the dealer wiped :blast

But it does sound like something worth trying :thumb
And it supersedes my question about the version cos I'll get the newest one. Win win..

Some good info so far, thanks Rick, Paul & Ian :clap

Open garmin Express
Click on Garmin Express (in the top lefthand corner of the screen0
Click on "About Garmin Express"
A window opens showing what version you have. Mine shows Version 5.1.0.0
Also in that window is an option to click on "Check for updates to Express"

Worth reformatting your SD card as well to MS-DOS (FAT) (FAT32)
I'll try that this evening :thumb

The only option is 'close', 'minimise' and either selecting my NV or adding a device :

Hi

The latest map update, where its split, fits onto my Nav5.

That my new Nav5 that I has to pay Garmin £108 for because my old one died when I tried to update and destroyed all the operating system and contents.

What he said . I had what sounds like the same problem. Deleted Garmin Express and downloaded latest version. All OK.

A quick update of this evenings 'fun'
Gawd, why is Garmin stuff so frustrating ??

The posted 'hard reset' instructions didn't work. And it took me about 2 hours to get it to reset. Turns out I need to press the bottom right corner as the unit is already starting up.

I've uninstalled GE off the MacBook & reinstalled it. But I haven't managed to reformat the SD card. It actually says its FAT32 already. Should I reformat it anyway ?

I tried to download GE to my Windows PC but first I had problems getting the wireless dongle to allow me to connect to the interweb & then when I'd finally downloaded it I discovered my OS was too old :blast

I'm currently trying to update the maps on wife's laptop after downloading GE. Whatever you do don't tell her or I'll be responsible for every glitch on it till the end of time

Less than 2 hours to go, keep your fingers crossed :)

Sounds like you've done a soft reset.

Won't do any harm reformatting your card. Worth trying.

Have you give up with the Mac?

Soft reset seems to be what I got
Those instructions are exactly what I did. Only once did I get 'loading' come up & when I lifted my finger it went back to showing 'system'

Grand, I'll try reformatting. Or maybe just try a new card.

Nope. I can't give up on it, I've only just got the MacBook ! I wanted it for travelling as I think it'll be more robust than laptops have proved to be in the past. And I use a Mac in work...

Edit : I've just checked & it's successfully updated off a W10 laptop :bounce1

New mapping looks good :thumb

I tried a couple of times to do a hard reset this morning. Once I got the 'delete user data' to which I said yes. But it didn't delete my favourites nor did it stop the unit asking did I want to import 4 routes which I'd previously deleted off the unit. I changed some of the settings but not all.

Anyway, it's as good as it's going to get at this stage. Now I just need to reread Basecamp instructions - I think the New England Riders (http://www.newenglandriders.org/Learn_BaseCamp_MAC.pdf ) & Redricks (http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/396216-Basecamp-and-Nav-5-My-way) are the most concise, or at least easiest for me to understand.

And then practice, practice, practice...

Thanks all for the help & advice guys. I love this site :clap
