After reading this post I went and opened a Makro account today at the Leicester branch...Streetpilots are still on at £699 + Vat untill next wednesday (29th Oct)...So I then drove to derby and opened a Costco account where they are currently £599 + Vat.
Good to see you got one Rob, we will soon have enough with GPS's to run a Geocache Rally on Sunday. Bit like hid and seek and finding hidden treasure ( not really ) but does make for an enjoyable day out.
I can't believe how fast these things get through a set of batteries I've just got through a set of Duracells in under two hours...I guess I was spoilt with the GPS V. I've got a Ni-Cad rapid charger for the bike so it's not really an issue, I'll have it plugged into the bike (or car) for normal use and a set of batteries charged if I ever use it away from a vehicle (only occasional use).
Brilliant bit of kit though Worth the money just to piss off the Anti GPS bods. We have a chap at work who does orienteering at the weekends. I've had my monies worth this morning shoving the streetpilot under his nose
If you use the unit at the computer a lot, it makes sense to get a serial / power cable from Garmin, or make your own (like I did).
The standard serial cable from Garmin doesn't have the +12V wire in it, but they sell a cable (for a lot of money of course) that does.
You can make your own using a pFranc plug for a lot less though.
You can take 12V from the PC power supply, the yellow + black wires at the power connectors inside the case that connect to your harddisks / CD reader etc.
I already have a pile of these connectors. I made a lead for the GPS V I've just sold to Jim McSharry. I Just need to get round to making one for the Streetpilot, It's like any new toy and has to be played with till you're bored with it...at least I don't use it to find the WC (take a bow mr McSharry).
