Other than for some ‘cosmetic’ work,the above road is now open and without restrictions. Had an uninterrupted run down the entire length for the first time in years. The road has been widened and has a really smooth surface. Some lay-byes have been added and cars are now parking on the cliff side of the ravine on what seems to be drainage areas running along the length of the road so something to look out for. Other than that an excellent road.

I agree. We had a great stay in Hotel Rural Villa Elena a few years ago. You get a lot of the Spanish hiking, canoeing and walking crowd but not many bikers. Friendly bar and restaurant owners and hardly any foreign tourists. It's very quiet and a nice change from Potes.
I actually preferred it too, great bars in the square and a restaurant or two
Having ridden through it for 30 years to get to Potes, I am glad we had a week there instead
Great road up behind there into the Picos area and better than the choked La Hermida N621 route
Nearer the coast too, which meant new places to explore
Staying in Panes or Canga opens up a whole different side to the Picos and Asturias areas
Another place to look at is Las Arenas,Cabrales.Very nice small Spanish town at the foot of the Pico's. It's another place thats not inundated with bikes,plenty of bars and restaurants, in the big carpark theres a cafe that does very cheap Spanish cuisine, bit like the plate de jour in France. Good link roads round the base of the Pico's and a minute away from some cracking roads into the mountains.
