I know IGN do some regions of Spain but not all at 1:25000

anyone suggest decent mapping for planning trail routes?

I'm looking at the Terra Alta or Aragon regions in Spain, or possibly Mark Wales

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=242362

routes through Portugal with a view to 2-3 weeks out there in December.

GS1200 and GS800.....if anyone fancies coming along? no plans yet, but somethings going to come off.

Sorry but I am not 'sat nav' savvy.... but I use this site for my route planning and I havent got lost yet....
It gives you the coordinates of the icon when you flick over the map or pic.
Have a play...if you drag it out to a larger scale it goes into map form

Spanish mapping

Hi JP

The last 3 years I have toured the Pyrenees and used maps from a company called www.Compegps.com.
They are a Spanish company and very helpful, the map I use is called Spanish Topo which covers the whole of Spain and is very similar to our OS maps showing every track and footpath.
I run it on a PC at home for planning and a windows pda on the bike.

Hi Ian,

current planning for us is out to Santander on 15th from UK, return 3rd from Santander. (this is subject to Isabelle gettig holidays confirmed this week.)

I've been in discussion with Dave at Trail Bike tours about setting up some route itinaries around Aragon, but nothing is firm at all.

If I can get hold of some decent mapping (see post above) then we will probably just head down there and make it up ourselves.

Have you been around there before?

JP

have a look, http://www.tiendaverde.es/mapasesp/en/mapas.php?lang=en all the maps you need.
takes a bit of time to research regarding what is available in the 25.000 & 50.000 scale maps.
the 25.000 are usually 4 sheets per issue.
for example, the number 31 has 4 sheets: Ribadesella, Nueva, Cangas de Onis, Benia de Onis.

The 25.000 maps are overkill for touring.

http://www.cnig.es/, has english content as well.

Mapping & Routes

Hi JP

I have used tienda verde in Madrid, their shop is like the old fashioned shops we used to have in the UK, it's full to the ceiling of maps and the staff are very helpfull and know what they are selling. They have GPS and CD's, but don't expect the Topo maps to be of the same quality at OS maps in the UK, for example a fine black line could be a trail, footpath, tarmac or not there at all! We use the Topo maps as a guide for planning on the PC then ride every inch before logging what is usuable for the future.
If your are heading south (Quesada, Jaen) then I could give you some proven trails for a GS, there is a hotel in the village that welcomes bikers.

Hope this helps

Steve

Southern areas of spain

Hi Steve,

I am most likely joining these guys on the trip to Spain and will be continuing further south to Cartagena. Once there I would be very interested to go on some GS routes.

I would be most grateful if you could highlight some areas .

Best Regards

Mark

Cartagena area

Hi Mark

Unfortunately when I was in the Cartagena area I was mountain bike mounted so I don't have any relevant routes for big trail bikes, I am now based a fair way away (Quesada, Jaen not Quesada, Alicanti) so it's too far for me to recce anything for you.
I was in Cartagena for several months many years ago and found it a wonderfull city, make sure you get out on foot and walk as much of it as possible as there's Roman remnants down a lot of the back streets where you'd least expect. The guns at Puerto Mazzaron are a must do, they were used in the movie "The Guns of Navarron".

I hope you enjoy your tour around, all the best

Steve

For maps in portugal I recommend Ndrive, they are very reputable and based in Portugal.

If you want check some maps online (usually more, way more, up to date than google maps) check mapas.sapo.pt

http://www.ndriveweb.com/

In portugal I recommend you to ride on the Geres National Park, on the north side of Portugal, close the Spain border.
