Spare Keys.......

I have only the one key for ignition, panniers etc (have mislaid plastic spare)

Seen some spare blank keys for GS/GSA for sale and was just wondering if my local high st. key cutting operatives (Timpsons) would be able to do the deed?

Anyone with any experience of this ?, and also, what are the implications for the immobiliser??

In a word, no.

The keys are chipped to work with the ring antenna / ECU... specific to your bike....

So unless you can find a blank, with a suitable chip and then get it cut and then coded to suit your bike you are stuffed...

Visit BuMW and get them to get you one.

You will need to produce your V5 doc, too. Or you should have to according to BuMW Park Lane at Battersea.

I believe keys need to have an electronic gubbins to switch-off the immobiliser. Genuine GS keys (including the plastic spare) have these, but I bet getting them programmed to work with your bike will cost you deep in the purse!

You can put a warranty claim in for another metal key...............or at least that's what my dealer did when I asked.

I did the same. Went to main dealer and ordered a new key. You will need the V5 and you Drivers Lic as ID. Cost for a new key, coded to the bike and the misplaced on deactivated, (locks still work but bike cant be started) was £24.
Also the missing key can be turned on again should you find it.

My 2006 ADV came with only one key and had to buy a spare.
My 2007 came with the same but there were so many whingers about the lack of a real spare they gave it as a "warranty" item FOC if requested.

You can put a warranty claim in for another metal key...............or at least that's what my dealer did when I asked.

From memory I had to produce the V5 and passport/driving licence. V5 to prove I own the bike and passport to prove who I was.

Apparently the keys are unique and if a bike is stolen and recovered the software can be interrogated to see which dealer issued the key. They obviously have to be careful to ensure someone trying to obtain a key is entitled to it and not some scrote trying to nick the bike.

If you live some distance from the dealer I would advise a phone call before visiting as its likely they won't have one in stock.

I have the same situation, got just one metal key with 2007 GSA, plastic one was lost by previous owner.

Have to order spare one from local BMW dealer, have to provide passport and vehicle registration card to proof I'm the owner. And it;s not free.

Really strange that BMW delivers bikes with just one metal key.

You can put a warranty claim in for another metal key.....or at least that's what my dealer did when I got my f800gs, he said the plastic one was broken and two weeks later a new metal key coded up and working fine.

Yes they can be cut but only if you can get the blanks - and nobody can.
Then you'd have to program it and it can't be done with the usual silica machines.

Cost at dealer is only £26.
