I've just bought some NGK Iridium after a recommendation by a mate.

But when I went to fit them,I remembered just how shite the tool kit is :




If I'm supposed to have a tool to remove the spark plug cap,then where is it ?


I've also checked under the tool tray,as I read it might be there,but it aint !!

BTW you might want to get a spark plug spanner while you're there and a front wheel removal tool, which are about £20 for the pair from your friendly dealer :thumb2
 
You don't need the cap puller. A screwdriver or small tyre lever will get it off easily. Use a bit of rag or tape to protect the paint.
 
I've just been adjusting the suspension on my Superduke,and in so doing used the supplied tool kit for the first time.

KTM's kits are always quite good but this is the best yet :



(as always,complete with bottle opener !!)

It does make the BMW kit look a tad lacking (like where's my bloody spark plug cap puller,you tight-fisted German twats !!) :

You want to be a bit careful as the spark plug cap is actually a coil - fragile and probably expensive...
I use two little screwdrivers, engaging the groove on each side of the cap simultaneously and gently levering the cap out of the head. A bit of rag or bicycle inner tube against the head on each side will protect the paint. Go slowly and easy does it... you are not defeating some complicated locking device, you are mostly working against the resistance of the rubber boot against the inside of the bore through the head and rocker cover.

If you have time, you can take one of the old 100 or 1150 plug cap extractors and modify it... and then throw it out because it doesn't work... ask me how I know:-)
 
The bike is in for a service in a week or so.

I think it's far easier if I just give the plugs for them the fit.

It doesn't seem worth buying a tool that I will only ever use once or twice !
 
This may sound silly, but does the "full" BMW kit I bought include a plug cap puller? It's hidden at the back of a garage full of stored furniture so I can't easily go and look...
 
I've just removed my plug caps. I sleeved two flat bladed screwdrivers with plastic (fuel type) hose, so no scratches. It was dead easy really. :thumb2
 
I recently serviced a 1150 GSA where the plug cap coil on the left side had corroded in good and proper, I couldn't get it to pull out without being too brutal, so as I was going to check the Tappets anyway I removed the rocker cover with the plug cap still inserted.
This would also give you better access to the Spark plug. :beerjug:
 
Another thing I found out today is that if you buy your four plugs from your friendly BMW dealer, they'll charge you approx £36.00 (£9.00 each), but they do come in a nice BMW branded box.

I got four NGK's from my local motor factors for a more reasonable £12.00.
