So, celebrating my half century this weekend, got a nice hire car and 2 nights in top notch hotels in the far North.

Last stretch was a run over Kessock Bridge to Inverness Airport....... view blocked by a transit van in lane 1, so I decided to creep up a little, just to pass him before going back to my default 10% over in a ringed speed limit.

Bugger, safety van probably nabbed me as I braked.

So, wondering if anyone in the know can advise on current threshold for safety camera van? Otherwise it's gonna take weeks due to the fact I was in a hire car.

Just trying to prepare myself.

If I remember correctly, in the days when there was an Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland, before the forces were agglomerated into Police Scotland, the guideline was 10% +1 was ok and 10% + 2 was a nick. However, that was only a guideline and I'm reliably informed that Strathclyde used to operate on 10% + 10.

So if you were on a dual carriageway subject to the NSL, you should be ok up to a true 78 mph which is probably c. 82 mph on a car speedo. How fast do you think you were going?

I believe those days are long gone.... In Norn Ireland I believe we are working off 10% + 3 before chasing drivers.
The Kessock Bridge is a big safe wide 50mph limit, so where I'm from it would be ok up to 58mph.

I was showing 59 when I spied the van, so probably a true 58 or 57 mph. Ok where I'm from, but I have read some scary crap re Police Scotland's approach to road safety.

It is regional Fiscal who decides what threshold will be. It was X +10%/X + 3kph as speedo error, ACPOS guidelines. However, as Fiscals didn't want to argue in court for 1 or 2 mph over limit it is normally 59 in a 50. That way there is no argument that you were exceeding the limit.

Perhaps a laser detector for Christmas ?

Not to put the dampeners on it , but Scottish police did promote a Zero tolerance for speeding last year .

Used to be 10% plus 2mph but as far as I am aware Scotland is still zero tolerance ie 1mph over posted imit

Yes, I saw that, but in the link in post 2 it said they were testing it for a 6 month period.

If this does not pan out in your favour, you might be interested to know that due to a jurisdictional legal anomalie, a Scottish court cannot award penalty points onto a Northern Ireland driving licence. In other words, providing your current licence has been issued at Coleraine and not Swansea you should be fine. Of course you will still have to pay the fine and court costs.

Trying to explain all this to insurance companies is another matter altogether.

Hope this helps.

If it goes the wrong way I'm hoping for a speed awareness course

Never had any points or done the course before.
But yeah, I'm familiar with the fact that we end up with two paper parts, a clean NI one plus a ghost UK one.

59 mph indicated

I live on the west coast and know about the 50mph limit on the Kessock........it's a well known stretch for bagging folks. However I picked up that you said you were doing an indicated 59, speedos are calibrated to run about 10% fast, so your true speed was about 54ish I'd say, that ought to be safe as it has not topped the 55 which is 50 + 10%. In any event good luck.
You're perhaps lucky, they are not now allowed to carry firearms openly in public, had they been they might've shot out your tyres

Ive a speedo app on the iPhone. It showed 57 @ 59 in the hire car

I have previously checked it against the sat nav in the past and it was bang on.

Betty hopefully your not screwed but Inverness show little tolerance for speed particularly on the A9, they have clamped down with the NC500 big style too. Even worse for me as I have a van!
Good luck loon.

That was in the days of cable operated speedos, they weren't calibrated they just had to make them over read by that much so that they did not fall foul of legislation- Modern speedos are far more accurate and not likely to be more than 2 or 3 mph over.

I got flashed (by a camera) a fortnight ago in a 20 mph zone, I watched my dash cam footage & can see a bus pulling further ahead in the vital period so that must have been going faster. I guess I had the choice of peering at my speedo or instead watching the road & seeing the cyclist just beyond the painted zone crossing my lane & slowing by the time I got to him to allow him to carry on safely instead of being stranded in the middle of the road.

So should I study the speedo to avoid a fine or instead judge my speed by that of a bus so I can see the road ahead. Wasn't even a built up area, parks both side & the road is 4 lanes wide, including the bus lane.

Apparently my crime as doing 25mph whereas 24 is the threshold. Seemingly no option of speed awareness course.

Just cash collecting I reckon !!!

But as it's a 20mph zone should yu not have been watching the speed as well ? don't get me wrong I'm probably as bad a s anyone else and slip over the limit now and again.

My new Honda CRF1000 is indicating 10% above actual, I found out by checking the speedo against my Garmin, my Yeti too reads 10% above. I was under the impression that legislation is in place to ensure all speedos over read, maybe I'm wrong.

It shouldn't happen, but we all know it's easy to nudge over the limit and I had such a moment a week or so ago and I afterwards downloaded my Garmin track to check exactly what I was doing when I passed the camera, it's borderline, so I'm waiting for the 14 days to expire. Meanwhile I have set the Garmin speed alert to remind me when I'm over. Will be the first time in 43 years riding/driving.
