I have a UK speed cameras database file and can read this into my copy of Microsoft Mapoint. The problem is that I am running and early development version so can't export the data into a format that can be read into mapsource, thus enabling us to have a garmin SP3 compatable file.
Can one of you guys with autoroute have a go and see if you are able to create a file that can be read by map source ?

Thanks

Simon

In order to import into Garmin Mapsource you need them to be in PCX-5 file in WGS84 format for a waypoint file *.wpt.

An interim step can be achieved by importing into GPS Utility ( http://www.gpsu.co.uk ) in a variety of formats. GPS Utility will accept simple file structures such as from Waypoint+ program ( http://www.tapr.org/~kh2z/Waypoint/ ) which produces a file structure as follows:

Waypoint, waypoint name, latitude, longitude, date , time , waypoint description.

Example:

Waypoint,D,10X215,34.064531922,-117.2959507350,11/23/1995,19:29:00,I10 X1215
Waypoint,DM,10X215,34.06548,-117.80632,11/23/1995,19:29:00,I10 X I215
Waypoint,DMS,10X215,34.06453,-117.29595,11/23/1995,19:29:00,I10 X I215

There are other utilities such as GT Filepro 1.3 ( http://www10.aeccafe.com/link/one_time_reg.php?link_id=413)

There is a utility "GeoConv" (accessible at http://www.kolumbus.fi/eino.uikkanen/geoconvgb/index.htm ) which allows user defined input structures that can then be converted to a number of different GPS Mapping Unit file structures. Typically it requires:

ID, Description, Latitude, Longitude, Height although not all fields are manadtory.....

There are about 1,001 different utilities and there is a whole new trainspotting recreation now being built around Waypoints.

You need however to be careful in that there is a limit to the number of points that a Garmin Unit can accept which will probably be exceeded by the number of Speed Cameras....

Is that a "yes" or "no"?

Yes, but give me time I have both autoroute and Waypoint+ and PS Utility on my desktop at home but cannot get on it cause the kids have more valid reasons.......

Will try this weekend.

Simon, In your download can you create as a CSV or Tab Seperated. I assume that you are exporting from Mapppoint to Excel. If so can you save as CSV and post...

Only problem is a SPIII has room for 500 waypoints and you have over 2000 SCs (is that right?)

The problem that I have is that my version of Mappoint does not give me the option to export as this is greyed out. I have produced a 'wpt' file but I think that the format is a little wrong as it can't be read by mapsource, maybe you could take a look and see if you can get it to work. The file is too big to attach so I can email it to you if you PM me with your email address.
If we can produce a working waypoint file then I was thinking of just loading in the cameras that are on or near the area that I was going to travel as the database contains 2742 cameras at present which as you say will not fit on the SP3

Cheers

Translation of Speed Camera File

Folks,

Here is a translation of the speedcamera file in WPS format (I had to zip to keep below 155k)

Some notes:

1. I have made the assumption that the location coordinates are in WGS84 format. If in UTC format I would have to do a translation. However initial check on known speed cameras seems to imply that it is in WGS84

2. I took a txt file with comma delimiters into Excel and transposed columns (did not need to but helped me work through), added column headers and waypoint symbol (skull & cross bones) then imported into ExpertGPS (easyGPS does not allow file conversion - cost $74 for ExpertGPS) then exported as a wps file format (I have to look into waypoint export format)

3. Opened under Mapsource as a new Map (from here you should be able to export waypoints)

IMPORTANT

I do not believe that the file I was supplied is accurate or contains all the Speedcameras. In looking at local speedcameras known speed cameras were missing and I know that some of these are active as they show up on my Radar Detector.

The file showed none on Balliol Road in Bootle and there are two speed cameras which consitently show active on the Radar detector.

In addition the list showed only 2 speed cameras on the A5036 and there are 6 from Switch Island (M57/M58) to Liverpool Docks. Again these consistently show active but not always.

This is unlikely to be an error in WGS84 formatting and is more likely to be an incomplete listing from the initial source.

DO NOT USE THIS FILE AS A REFERENCE FOR SPEED CAMERAS - YOUR LICENSE MAY BE AT RISK IF YOU DO & IT IS ENTIRELY YOUR RESPONSIBILITITY AS TO WHAT PURPOSE YOU USE THIS FILE FOR...

... I assume you are going to use it to be able to go and look at them - rather like bird watchers or train spotters...

So Simon, could you send me the lastest file and perhaps you need to complain to whoever supplied you with the locations!!!!

If it is from an organisation which claims to provide all details then I would strongly recommend you do not place reliance upon the warnings:D If you paid money for it then ask for it back:D

Firstly thanks for converting the file into the correct format, it seems to have been a fair bit of work. The original file was downloaded from here http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/uksafetycameras.php
And is original for use with the Tom Tom navigator.

I agree that some are missing that I know are there maybe these are included in the later file.
I think if the formating had been incorrect then they would mostly be sited in fields if you know what I mean.
One thing that is scary is the shear amount of camera sites in the UK, its a suprise that anyone still has a license !!

Well it was worth a go.

Cheers

Simon,

I will still try, it is just a matter of finding the right file.

and yes it is scary.... look at Blackpool

I cannot read the PocketPC file so would need it translated. If anybody has a MOrpheous or BlueAngel can they advise on the file?

Mmmmmmm

Clear as mud, understood every word,
Wot gas mark would that be on and should I marinate it over night ??
