I have a friend who has bought an imported GS so the speedo is in KM, is their such a thing as an overlay that can be stuck on glass to make conversion easier or would sourcing a new console be the way forward ?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Tipex mark 30, 40, 50 and 60 etc.:thumb2

I can't understand why manufacturers don't move over to digital speedos so that we can change between MPH and KPH. I think the only company to do that currently is Aprilia.

It's more than the way forward. It's illegal. I imported a BMW car from South Africa a few years ago and even though it was "European spec" - right hand drive, emission controls, etc., the speedo in km rendered it illegal. It had to be replaced. When the vehicle enters the country it must go through an SVA test which will check for all these things. Check it out or you may be riding an illegal vehicle.

Yamaha do as well....my 98 model R1 you could change between units at will....;)

not a requirement

an mph speedo is not a requirement for importing, registering or mot.

I know cos i recently imported my car.

I did buy a gps speedo from fleabay for about 50 squid which was very good just for my peace of mind

It is not Illegal to have a KPH only speedo

Most Trucks have KPH Tachos
some without mph markings, and all pass the plating test.
i'd recommend marking the face at >> 50 kph = 30 mph
64 kph = 40mph
80kph = 50mph
100 kph = 62 mph [lorry drivers old speed limit]
110 = 69 mph
120= 75 mph best speed to travel at and not get nicked :augie:augie

My Hymer has KPH only speedo, as have all I have imported in last 5 years, never had to change one yet :D

I've imported KPH cars from Ireland and have had no probs,
BMW will supply you a certificate that will negate the need for SVA [£60.00 at last time of purchase] if you send the VIN number or ask a dealer to do it
Some lying bastid dealers say they can't :spitfire just to sell you a really really expensive mph speedo :spitfire..

as an Aside, our Reasonably priced car [Citroen C3] has a programmable read out>>

KPH or MPH :augie and LPK or MPG :augie

Even if you get the speedo dial overlaid or altered to show MPH by some means, the odometer will still count up in kilometres. To change it to reading in miles it will need to be altered in the software using a GT1 computer at a BMW dealer.

Don't know about mainland, but in Nortern Ireland bike won't pass MOT without both kph & mph on speedo face. Must be on dial, not stuck to outer cover.

You have to have a MPH speedo for an SVA test
You only need an SVA test if importing from outside of the EU, so you can have a French or German car with a KPH speedo.
