SORRY, me again. Obviously need a handle bar mount and power lead.
Whats best, I was thinking about a TouraTech lockable bracket (£67) is this suitable and a straight forward fit to GS bars?

Next, a power lead. Hard wire one in somewhere, or flying lead to accessory socket? Or both

Ok, Ok, I'm now off searching the UKGSer site. So that's Sunday taken care of then :( and this week at work ;)

GPS Mounting

Ned,

I fitted a RAM mount instead of the Touratech item, it is less obtrusive and with a suction cup can also be used in the car.

Have a look at WWW.cycoactive.com, follow the site through to mountings and you will see a whole range of mountings for all types of GPS unit. There is also a whole range of pictures of customers bikes with the mountings and units in place.

As for the power cable, you can buy a garmin cable with bare ends and hard wire it in yourself, but that means cutting into the loom.

Otherwise you could buy the BWM cable, which is a Garmin cable with a bridge unit on the end, specifically for BM's, which simply plugs into the back of the accessory socket. The advantage with this one is that if/when you change the bike you can take it off and put it on the new one.

Of course, if you have an Adventure you could just plug the cable into the accessory socket on the front fairing, sorted.

That's what I'm after - where can I get one from?

Cheers

Ned,
I hardwired mine across the battery, that way if you stop for a cuppa/wotever it dos,nt turn yer gps off, no ill effects todate, did put a .5amp fuse in though (Maplins or a tv repair shop sell em).

As for a mount I went for a ttech lockable :) Thing is though if the bast*ards want yer gps they get it wot ever its on........

Ned sorry to complicate things, but you can RAM mount the TTech supports. Dont really know if its worth it but you can.

Rainman,

The Bridge is built into the BMW cable that is available from any BMW dealer. They are expensive, about £55-60, and there is one cable available that fits all bikes.

Took me about an hour to fit & cable tie on to the bike.

Get in touch with Rob Farmer. £10 for a power cable to fit the GS. It wires direct to the battery & comes with an in-line fuse. Superb quality as well.

Suggest you look here !

Ned:

The 'basic bracket' that came with your SP III (the one you use to hold the SP III to the beanbag, or to the sticky car mount) works just great on a moto - I used one for 80,000 km's of riding over 2 years, never had a problem with it.

You just remove the little Phillips screw from the bottom, this allows you to remove the swivel base assembly (not needed on a moto) and you use the 4 holes in the back of the bracket to attach it to a Ram-Mount backing plate. This is a less expensive solution than the Touratech mounts. The Touratech mounts are fine products, but quite expensive.

Concerning the cable, if you want to hardwire to the motorcycle's power supply, just get a Garmin power and data cable (pretty cheap) that comes with bare ends, and use the two wires that supply DC. Disregard the two wires for the data signal. Or, cut the end off a power cable with a cigarette lighter on it (though I think the power-data cable is longer than the cigarette lighter cable). You can find part numbers and descriptions of all these accessory products, including the mounts (but not the RAM products) at this link: StreetPilot III Accessories.

For RAM products (used to hold the Garmin mounting bracket), see this link: RAM-Mount

Here is a link to some photos of the installation I have described above: GPS on the ST1100

TIP, 5 amp Fuse is a bit high for an electronic device, Garmin recommend a 2 amp glass fast blow, try a 3amp blade for a bike, as the glass ones are prone to vibration.

better safe than .........................

If you going to the trouble of fitting a permanent mount, fit a permanent cable too!

It really isn't hard to do, but, as enabb suggests, a permanently live feed is the way to go.

If you use a Touratech mount (I have one for my SPIII and have ordered one for my 2610) wrap some tank tape around the bars before you mount the Touratech mount - it gives a better purchase and stops the bars from being scratched in the long term.

sorry should have put a 0 infront of the .5 :(

The BMW bracket clamps on to the handlebar crossbar and the Garmin curved bracket is mounted on that. The bracket is only £11.50. I had not problems with it on a 3000 mile run through Scandinavia last summer.

Touratech do a power lead that works out at about £28 including postage. Or try Rob Farmer for his one at a mere tenner.
