Ned:
Some thoughts that might help you:
1) Probably the manuals that came with your GPSR are not the latest issue. You can download (free) the latest set of manuals for the SP III from this link:
Garmin SP III Documentation
2) While you are at it, make sure you have the latest version of MapSource, which is the program that runs on your PC to allow you to move map segments, routes, tracks and waypoints to and from your GPS. You can download the latest version here:
Garmin Software Updates. Note that you will need to have one prior installation of MapSource (from a CD) on your computer before you can apply the update you download from the website.
3) The manual that explains how to use MapSource has just recently been revised, it contains a wealth of new information. You can download it, free, from this link:
MapSource Manual, Revision C, December 2003
4) Garmin makes a training video for users of the SP III. I have not seen the video myself, but my experience with other Garmin training videos is that they are usually quite useful (and quite casual in their presentation). You can find out more info about the video, including the part number you will need if you want to order it locally, at this URL:
Garmin StreetPilot III Instructional Video
5) Go to this website
www.my-mc.com and do a keyword search on the text "StreetPilot III". You will find a lot of posts I made during the years 2001-2003 about the SP III, mostly relating to mounting issues, operational issues, etc.
