Gave the 2002 GS some rice today down a long straight, and my mate riding behind said sparks were coming out of the exhaust...lots, not a few!! The bike is fitted with a Y piece and Revolution. Any one got any ideas what could cause this or had the same experience? It's going to Rainbow next week for its 18k medical, so I presume they will find any problems, but I'm curious what it could be and reluctant to ride until then for fear of doing serious damage.

Thanks

This is more than likely some of the exhaust packing being burned off - as you were giving the bike plenty of throttle for a long time, this can sometimes happen. How old is the exhaust can ?

Thanks for your ideas.

I have ruled out anything wrong with the engine as there was no popping or back firing. Your idea about packing catching fire is interesting and something I hadn't thought about. I bought the can off this site secondhand, but it was virtually new and I have only done about 500 miles with it on. I was thinking about hot carbon and weak mixtures, but this will be highlighted at the next service.

Thanks again

Mike

mine does it - when it backfires i get a jet of blue flame. did with y-piece and standard can, and y-piece with a remus.

i used to like it - it's starting to annoy me now though....

Yes, but no back fire, just mega sparks.

remus can

I wonder if its something to do with the internals of the can itself mike rather than the packing. I take it doesn't do it with the std can & y piece? Poss faulty material?Perforated baffle tube melting?

I have a Y piece and Remus titanium can and apart from the odd blue flame and usual popping not a problem. I quite like it.

Prior to the titanium can I had the carbon fibre version. Over a period of about 6 months, the bike got louder, popped and banged more and threw burning wadding out of the back when playing hard. Eventually it disintegrated and fell apart. It’s now in the skip.

Expensive fun
