Split in drive shaft rubber on my 6 week old GSA

Impressive mileage in 6 weeks...good man!

Super glue will sort it, it's very good with rubber, (and skin) until you get it fixed properly.

It's a bit odd as there isn't a seem there to split and it doesn't look pinched (all paid for)

It gets caught in the drive shaft universal joint as it turns if your unlucky and it gets pinched when the joint is on an angle gripping the rubber and as it continues to turn it rips a hole.
May happen if you have the suspension set for two up but ride it solo as the joint is on an extreme angle.

That could be it ! I was camping & fully loaded last week end. didn't notice I hadn't switched it off until Wednesday this week.
Thanks for that Terry.

That ticking noise you may be able to hear is my heart pumping rusty piss ....... If you don't like it, get rid of it :comfort

Why is there always somebody on these forums who comment, but does not contribute with a possible solution other than with spitefully negative and unhelpful comment :rob

Always has been, always will be. Welcome to the weird, wonderful and wacky world of UKGS. They are a bunch of spiteful old *****, but occasionally amusing or helpful. Worth my subs, mostly...

Hey! when did the auto censor kick in? I actually typed c.u.n.t.s and it turned into *****

I've offered a solution and just for you here it is again: If you don't like it then get rid of it!

The world is full of whingers who want to know what's going to happen when the warranty runs out and who can I blame/seek compensation from? :augie

The OP has the right attitude :thumby:

Probably just vandalism by a jealous 1150 owner :) - no technical reason for it to happen.

I'm not sure where this myth started that the final drive won't take the two up setting with only one rider. Surely the enduro mode jacks the suspension right up but you are not expected to carry a pillion then.

That's true, but it's still getting pinched in the universal joint. Turn your wheel while holding your finger on the rubber boot you will feel the joint closing and gaping.
Another point is if you happened to go off a jump or the bike lifts over undulations in the road the swing arm will drop allowing full clearance so could possibly catch in the joint then too,
Either way it shouldnt be able to happen, so should be a warranty issue any way.

Perhaps a thicker boot is needed

How did you find this out Terry ...... Did the dealer tell you or was it via work?[/

I don't work for the Motorcycle side of BMW but I found the bit about the universal joint when the rubber on my first GS got caught while washing my bike, that's when I noticed you could feel the universal joint through the rubber. I think the bike may have still been warm and when I put water on the rubber it sunk in like it was being vacuumed which made it trap in the joint. Luckily it didn't rip I pulled up one corner and it reinflated back to shape.
