Split in drive shaft rubber on my 6 week old GSA

Ideas that might be helpful -

Grease inside the boots with a super slippy silicone grease. If the boot does get trapped there's more chance of it slipping free.

Also ask the dealer for a spare as compo for all the hassle. It could be handy if a boot gets trapped a long way from home.

BMW have already sorted out a fix for it :thumby:

Looking at the pics the splits occur on the raised part of rib, surely the shaft would more likely rip the inner ribs rather than outside if it touches.
My hex head shaft boot between gearbox was dislodged & it ripped hole in inside ribs closest to it.

I wonder if it could just be a bad design and or crap rubber, manufacture fault on the LC ?

My bike is booked in the this coming Tuesday for service and to have the boot replaced. I've just rang the dealer 5 mins ago to check that the replacement part is in stock and it is. I asked how many bikes have they seen this on and they said they haven't seen it ever before !!

I'm not sure where this myth started that the final drive won't take the two up setting with only one rider. Surely the enduro mode jacks the suspension right up but you are not expected to carry a pillion then.

Enduro mode doesn't actually jack up the bike, it's only the x1helmet+luggage and x2helmets together setting that raises the ride height ie the jacking up!

Enduro setting does not alter ride height or increase the drop angle of drive shaft.....Just adding my 10 penneth :P

Exactly. Well said.

Same Problem

Mine has the same tear in the rubber boot. I assume it's been repaired under warranty but I haven't seen my bike for over 6 weeks due to other issues.
The tear occurred somewhere in the bumpy roads area round Spa in Belgium.Suspension was set on two up & hard (just me on with luggage).
Dealer looked very puzzled when I showed them it as they hadn't seen it before.

Seems they still not fixed this issue, my march 2013 bike did exactly the same within a couple of wks. However it never got fixed because the bike went back to bmw.

I stand corrected on the enduro mode, but I still think its a myth. The manual has no warnings about using the incorrect ESA settings or any guidance as to what additional weight constitutes luggage, or two riders. I'm sure that there are many tossers who make up two riders all on their own. :D

My guess is it is a flaw in the rubber moulding since it fails so quickly.

It's no Myth one way or another it is getting trapped in the universal joint and being ripped, it shouldn't happen it shouldn't be able to happen
But it is happening like someone else said on here this is not a new issue it was happening on the 2013 bikes too. Luckily so far I've not had a problem with it on both my 2013 and 2014

my 2010 twincam that stands outside everyday (no de humidified or air cooled garage)P showed slight signs of perishing t 24k, so I replaced it..long live the WC..

if you press down on that rubber boot and rotate the rear wheel , you can actually feel the u-joint rotating underneath. There isn't much clearance.

so it is obvious that at certain swingarm position(s) , the boot is allowed to contact the rotating shaft below causing grief.

its a small issue , really. No need to get worked up at all.

Does sound like an issue if you take the bike off road. Suspension will be at extremes of articulation and under extreme load.

Yes exactly what I said in earlier post.
