Im wondering if anyone would have any experience or advive on the following.

I have a 1200gs 2005 which has fitted a full Bos system standard fiter etc but occasionally it splutters and the clears and wont do it again until another couple of rides out. Never really run in the wet so water ingress is doubtful i have recently fitted the booster plug( £30-00 one) but the bike did this before i fitted it so that also is out of the equation (i think) It is more of an anoyance than a running problem as it only does it occasionally.
I have an auto com system fitted and when it does the splutter you can hear an electrical 'click' interferance as the splutter happen swhether this relevant im not sure.
I thought i would ask first before taking it to BMW as this fgorum does have a font of knowlage .

Any advice would be appreicated :nenau

Obvious questions

when was it last serviced ?
When did it start ?
what had you just changed ? eg the BOS system ?
When does it happen ? eg
at the same revs
going up a hill
just after filling up (at a particular garage ?)
on a cold engine
How often does it happen
how long does it last ?
what do you do to fix it ? eg wait 10 mins / rev the nuts off it ?

who do you know with a GS911 - saves going to BMW and it may just tell you what the fault was.

With the answers you may diagnose your own problem, but it will help someone else to help you if not.

Good luck

Dave

My guess would be a coil breaking down or possibly an FPC starting to fail. Both are common faulty on ageing 12GSs.

Right,
Serviced 4000 miles ago (total milage 10800)

Started last year

Bos system on from when ibought it

Happens after a blast hard acceleration sometimes out of the blue
Happens every other ride out , but saying that the last time i rode was before this time . november ( Trail ride in winter) and it did it then

It last for about 1 to 2 miles but intermitant over that distance , then stops.

To fix it , it just stops , it is not a major misfire more of a slutter hesitation , not quite full power then clears

Thanks for the advice :beerjug:

Thanks but would you class an imaculate 05 with full servive well looked after (better than wife) always garaged and cleaned as ageing ?
I will ask at my local dealer about the coil / FPC

Thanks appreciate you advice :beerjug:

Having had an 05 from new I wondered about the battery? Probs here manifest themselves in all sorts of different ways.
Check static volts are over 13 for a quick clue.
And if "it is not a major misfire more of a slutter hesitation , not quite full power then clears" I would not be looking too hard just yet.
You make no mention of fuel but with a low mileage like that you are not going to be filling every week - maybe some water/condensation in the system?
And deffo on the 911, I would lend you mine but.....

Hi , battery normally kept on trickle charger when not used , normally fuel up with unleaded , full tank , ride out then fill back up using any fuel station but does not normally happen after a refuel as far as i can remember
Should i use super unleaded ?

on the info you say you can hear the break down on the auto com, this would lead you to electrical problem, start lowering the list next time it happens flick the kill sw off/on, if still there wiggle the key, next stop turn off and restart, none of that will proberly work as i would guess its a coil or coil lead.
if you can hear it its electrick.

hi, i am new here and just bought an 09 r1200gs se. de- catted and acelarator mod the same. I thought mine had same problem, but then realised it was the traction control cutting in, i think?

I will go out and give the above a go - never thought of that, as as soon as it happens it seems to clear then do it again (not quite as bad but not running at full chat) then stops and wont do it again - boo hoo bloody pain:mad:

Misfire under load is commonly associated with a weakness of the ignition system and has been reported a few times in these forums. Breakdown of a coil is not unheard of, or even something simple like it not being properly pushed down onto the plug.

Given you are running a BOS system you may be running a little lean so any problem in the fuelling will also show up when the demand is highest, in other words hard acceleration. Water in the tank has been known to produce these symptoms.

Best bet is electrical though.

It's unlikley the battery is a cause as when running the allternator will easily produce the necessary power to keep the system happy.

I'm not aware of a reported a 'weakness of the ignition system' but would echo looking at plugs, plug caps and (most likely) a coil starting to break down.
Coils are a right PITA, you can't really test for such an intermitant fault; replacement is usually the only way of ruling out / fixing the coil.

Thanks i will take all on board and try a few things out - buy the way someone has mentioned a 911 test whats that ?

Recently had the same problem. Intermittent hesitation/stutter when riding hard or carrying a heavy pillion. Also most apparent when rolling on and off throttle at speed. Dealer couldn't replicate symptoms but agreed to replace coils and problem solved.

hi mate i had same fault on my bike bmw garage could not find any faults, bike went out of warranty had a look at fault myself starting at basics [plugcondition] one of them was cracked up the ceramic, changed them fault fixed. p.s garage said to me they had changed all my plugs which was bullshit [bmw edinburgh].

Update: I thought that the new coils had sorted the problem but after a 150 mile plus run today, I went for an overtake and the stutter was there again. So it will be back to the dealers again next week. The difficulty is though that the mis is so intermittent that the dealers cannot replicate the problem. Its a real pain in the arse!

I got the dealer to put some new plugs in today and that seems to have sorted it. They did find a crack in the porcelain which may have been caused when I lost my footing doing a quick U-turn and the bike went over. Aparenly you can damage a plug in this way. Fingers crossed I'm sorted now.

Thanks again for all you replies - i will definatley check the plugs (havent done this yet ) but thats a good thought - will find a deep enough spanner and chec em out - let you know how i get on.
