Spots on 2010 GSA..Fused or Canbus?

A recent thread on HID lights on here questioned whether the spot lights on a 2010 GSA are controlled by the canbus, or if they were fused seperately?

I know pre 2010 models were fused seperately.

But when I had my 50w HIDs fitted to my main and dipped beam by the great Les Wassell, I also tried to have 50w HIDs fitted to the spots.

Due to technical reasons beyond me :augie they wouldn't work. Les said this was because the 2010 spots were now controlled through the Canbus and it was preventing them firing up every time because of the drain on it.

By changing the HID bulbs to 35w solved the problem.

Now somebody has said the 2010 spots are still seperately fused!

Now I've no reason to question Les Wassell. I've every confidence he knows exactly what he's talking about. And at the end of the day I'm more than happy with my 35w HID spots...

.....I just wondered if the wise men of the forum know for sure?

You can run spots outside of the canbus, all you need is power to the relay from the battery (fused) and a 12v signal to trigger the relay, you can take this from the high beam lead.

Thanks, I've thought about having them switched with the main beam, but that does mean that you can't use them as riding lights. :thumb2

....but does that mean you're saying the spots are controlled by the canbus on a 2010 Gsa?

So what reason do have to question me?

So why would the 35w Hids work, but not the 50w ones when Les tried to fit them? :nenau

Are you suggesting that you'd like to have HID spotlights on all the time?

Wouldn't you just dazzle oncoming vehicles? All this "as bright as possible so the motorist sees me" crap is fine until the poor dazzled motorist can't see a thing and drives into you.

What confuses me is that I'm sure Les had fitted 50w bulbs to pre 2010 bike spots (this may not be the case, but I'm sure it's what was said :nenau)

So if the same wiring set-up is used on mine, a 2010 Gsa...why the problem? :nenau

Ultimately I'm happy with them at 35w, although I'd have liked 50w, but the problem caused Les a lot of hassle.
 
50W HIDS work on 09 and 06 bike - Main, dip & fog lights. No idea about 2010 or later but see no reason why won't work. Fog lights are fused and not run via Canbus. Speaking from personal experience.

Yup; thats what I do. Works a treat around london. When they dip their mirror you know they have seen you.
 
The left hand switch on the handlebar controls a signal to the ZFE (Computor) for the lights like High and Low beam. This computor than switches the power from the battery to the lights on or off. Like a relay but this one can think or calculate (logic or algorithim). On the accessory diagram no fog lights is pictured but it is mentioned as terminal 55 on the legend page which plugs into the ZFE:confused:. This terminal is also for the right hand heated grip. The harness for the fog lights has a relay and 7,5 Amp fuse. I suspect that that the power for the fog lights is taken directly from the battery hence the relay. As you said WindyChuffer. You should have a 35 gauge black wire with a white stripe from the ZFE connecting to that harness somewhere. BTW that harness has got more than 1 plug so I don't know where else it goes. This is read of a CANbus diagram for the GS. Will search for a wiring diagram to see what is going on.

This is way above my area of expertise, but I do know the Aux lights on my '08 GSA are linked somehow into the bikes electronics as well as being fused. I know this because if you turn the headlamp off with the engine running and then turn the Aux lights on, the headlamp switches itself back on so my logic (albeit questionable) says they are linked into the canbus as well as fused. The additional "Spots" I have fitted are completely seperate running off a relay and powered from a switched supply from a fuse box.

I have 35w HID's on the Aux lights, 50w HID on dip/main with no canbus issues. Spots are standard halogen as I don't like the HID warm up delay.

Well, according to the Owner's Handbook for the 2010 model (as good a reference point as any, I guess) it says the auxiliary lights are still fused:

Fuses, 154
Replacing fuses for auxiliary headlights, 129

Electrical rating of on-board socket 5 A with extra socket max 5 A, Total for all sockets

Fuses Electronic fuses protect the circuits. If an electronic fuse trips and de-energises a circuit, the circuit is active as soon as the ignition is switched
on after the fault has been rectified.

Fuse for auxiliary headlight with auxiliary headlights or with LED auxiliary headlights 7.5 A

Pages with pictures, too, on 129.

I'd have checked the owners manual, but I'm bed-ridden downstairs after an accident (long story!)...and my manual is upstairs....which is about unobtainable at the moment as if it was perched on top of Everest! :blast

All this seems strange cos I was originally directed by Les Wassell, who undoubtably knows his stuff.
And I spoke with him yesterday, and he'd checked with BMW, and a technician has said that there is "definately none fitted"!


It's a mystery!?! :nenau

Me?.....I wish I could just sit on my bike...let alone turn my lights on! :augie
