Spotted this near Sheffield - R100GS

Funny, isn't it?

I look at airheads today and I'd dearly like one. But I can clearly remember the day I bought my 'super-modern' R1100GS (from Vern) and was just blown away at how sophisticated it was next to the clattery old airhead I was selling (just like the one in his ad). The 1100's gauges alone were a feast for the eyes. Wow, this thing was SPECIAL! Better on every conceivable measure.

So how do we reach a point where the airheads are so much more valuable? I'm not saying it's wrong, for who am I to judge, I'm just saying it's interesting.

It’s a nostalgia thing still a great bike but has each new model comes along they improve and the R100GS became old, then they become a little scarce and the nostalgia kicks in and people forget why they sold the thing and want one again.
My friend did exactly the same spent a fortune on a total rebuild by Mikey and it’s a beautiful thing which now sits in his garage only coming out when I ride it.

Seems to be gone now

So which of you beggars bought it then?
Been looking (in a desultory sort of way) for a scruffy but honest blue/white '88-'90 at a price to reflect condition. Does such a thing exist? Was this it...?

There's this one near me; been on for ages so don't know if still available:

Yep, had seen that one. Thanks, but too nice for me - I'm toying with the idea of an mildly modified adventure build/special and messing with that that would be a waste.
I guess I'm after some sort of Paralever as I've already got one or two bits to suit. Not even certain if it has to be a GS, but if a suitable one does turn up it at least needs to be the earlier version - I struggle with the weird indicator switch set up of the later ones and don't want the weighty bullbars/screen set up. In no rush - no storage/garage space at the moment in any event...

Newer models are no allways better

The R100R , a roadgoing GS is a great bike and still reasonably priced.

I sort of agree. I bought an R1100GS in 1995 from Slocombes - their demonstrator, about a year old. I had it for 11 years, thinking it was the 'bees knees'. I'd never owned an airhead prior to that - I'd had a pair of K100RS over 8 years from 1987. I thought the airheads were very old hat. But in 2009 I bought an R90/6 as I wanted a classic (I really wanted an R90S but back then I couldn't justify the extra expense). In 2015 I found an R90S I could afford. I've accumulated one or 2 other airheads since then and just enjoy riding them and looking after them. My R100GS has finally proven itself as a successor to my R1200GS LC (!). It's not a better bike at all. But it is the better bike for me at this point in life.

...couldn't agree more ... at this time in my life too:thumb2

Have you seen this one? Tempted myself, but it would take me in a different and more costly direction to the current plan for My 80 outfit.

Val.

Paid £1500 for mine , and spent about £1000 doing it up including a Siebenrock power kit.

That could work! Better a bashed up r100r than a GS - IIRC it's essentially the same bike bar forks and rear subframe? And those would probably get binned anyway. The lack of headlamp/instruments not an issue for similar reasons. Can't see much in the way of crash damage so presumably that was confined to headlamp/instruments area - though that's hardly enough reason to park a bike up and ignore it for a quarter of a century (please tell me the frame's straight and the carbs were drained...) Lack of a V5 is a concern but VIN & engine nos could be checked. Hmm, what's a fair price...?
