Square tyre

Had a service this week and the rear tyre was marked as ‘amber’ on the visual checklist. The guy wrote ‘Badly squared’.
I honestly can’t feel any difference, seems a shame to replace the tyre as it’s still got tread left.
Is this dangerous? Would you guys change this tyre?

I'd have replaced that a fair while ago - hate the feeling of tipping in with squared-off tyres.

You will feel the difference.
 
I would change,

My LC had a rear tyre like that.

made tipping in scary as you just felt like you dropped off a cliff

Change it. You think the ride great as is - then when you change it you will notice a massive difference in smoothness.
 
Although it meets the "legal" requirements its actually toast. As is the front from having this influence over it. Looks like they have done a long slog up and down the motorway to get to Scotland (or the Alps) DAMHIK
Man up and spend the dosh on a pair of Roadtec 01 and see where it gets you.

If you do a lot of long slogs, that's probably not the best choice of tyre.
As above, I think that's goosed.
Not much tread on the contact surface if you have to brake hard in the wet.
 
Depends if you have too much money and want to buy a new tyre :-) . It's perfectly safe still and plenty of tread. New tyres always feel better. Your money, your choice!.
 
Do you not find leaning into a bend that suddenly things get a bit squirrely?

. . that would be when you are on the thin 'shoulder' of the square shape.

Fit a new tyre and it will feel like night and day!
 
You don't have to replace a square tire but they are not fun to ride when you hit the twisties because they don't steer nicely anymore...If you ride mostly straight roads I would change to a tire that lasts longer than the PR5 like CTA3 that also steers quicker in case you encounter some turns...;)
 
At some point as you lean just to the tight radius where the squared bit meets the original curve you will be on a slick roundabout and it will slide. As the bike drops you'll go onto the original curve and it will stop sliding but by that time you will be wanting clean kecks. :)

I've been there with the original Tourance. Ride slow or replace it.

Chocolate tyres like I have said before , do not take them to the hot roads of Spain as you will wear the whole tyre out in sub 1200 miles . It’s a wet tyre , not a distance tyre , one of my favourites in the sense of feel and grip , but do not last .Conti TA 3 would be a better choice

I'd agree CTA3 rear is better in the wet and greasy roads as well as in the turns than the R5 but I'm going back to the R5(T) as the CTA3 squares off like a bugger (the rear on mine at 6K is flat and almost bald in the middle) and I've found them a bit fidgety at motorway speeds (where I spend quite a bit of time). On R5Ts I'd normally get 8K on the rear and appreciably less flattening.

The front CTA3 is still going well though so it's staying.

All subjective though and dependant on rider weight, pillion, luggage, throttle and brake use, etc, etc, etc :blagblah
 
The bigger question is how did it get like that. It looks as though it's either just been ridden in a straight line, or too high pressure, or by a rider who doesn't exploit the good handling motorcycle. If the rider feels happy riding in that zone and not 'pressing on' then good luck to him, why change tyres.

It is the nature of the beast that if you go fast on mostly straight roads any tire will square off...But I can't believe that the PR5 will last 2k miles longer than the CTA3...No way ! Like Stick said you can kill the front in less than 2K miles which is ridiculous and makes the tire useless especially when a CTA3 will last up to 12K miles ridden hard ! With the TORQUE of the 1250 GS 6-7K on the rear seams about right...
