Normally when I turn the ignition to on I hear two quiet clicks and whirr as some magic happens somewhere in the bike. Today, though, I noticed the two clicks have changed in to two loud squeaks. Is this good or bad? What should I do?
Seriously, though, I'm off to Europe in 4 weeks so I want to make sure the bike's not falling apart.
Thanks!

I have the same, bike is due to be serviced on Saturday, I think it's the butterfly in the exhaust when it opens and closes

I had just that same thing 3 weeks ago, it started not long after a Europe trip. During the trip it was fine and then it started. Ironically it coincided with the brake warning flashing on the dash when the ignition was first switched on, I initially thought that it was something to do with the brake system, I took it in under warranty and it transpired it was exactly as Marki says. The exhaust flappy gizmo was seized. The unit was replaced and now no beeping! Simples. I dont know what the cost of the repair would have been as it was under warranty. Good luck.

Hey thanks guys! I'll get onto the dealer tomorrow. It's under warranty still, so hopefully it'll be covered.

I had the same problem touring in Greece. The part as stated is the flap not opening and closing properly and if left unattended will cause problems. The first BMW dealer I went to in Greece recognised the issue and gave me a NEW BMW part number that solves the issue. EMAIL COPY : I arrived in Patras and NICOS from BMW B.A Andriopoulos PATRAS diagnosed the problem as a prior part that BMW have since replaced. 18517712008 (OLD) with PART number 1851 8555 270. There is a problem with the exhaust flap opening and closing.
I was quoted 1800 euro to fix the problem in Patras. Instead I went to dealer in Athens, he submitted warranty to BMW and replaced the whole exhaust on warranty. Hope this helps....Ed

PS.... I posted the problem here just like you have and got some sound advise from really helpful guys but not the detailed solution given above to my seemingly identical problem. I also got loads of crud from tossers with dumb and useless mindless comments because they know nothing ... safe riding to you and all tossers (::)...

I have the squeak on mine, taken to the dealer for 6k service, again they said the greased it and within two days it's back, my dealer says to not worry about it as the grease just burns off, I find it very enjoying that they will not do anything about it

to MADMILLS: Push the buggers. See my earlier post with part numbers. original part is faulty and BMW know it.

The dealer was very relaxed about it, said it wasn't a big issue and to bring it in when I was passing. So I did nothing for a week and now it's stopped squeaking on it's own accord. I'll ask them to look at it at the next service, if it doesn't show up again before that.
