Can i get rid of the standard header pipes on my Adv? 1150 owners know that they've got that daft balancer pipe that links them together, i was wondering if you could replace them with straight through pipes. When the bike came out the journos claimed the balance pipe was introduced to calm some of the 'big twin pulses' and so satisfy EU noise legislation. If i can get some pipes done??? Will it make any negative difference to the engine running properly or will i get some nice throaty boomings out the back and a bit more poke?

The balance pipe is there so that the engine 'sees' two silencers and reulting exhaust bark is quietened down.

Technically you can lose the balance pipe, but you might have to do other things to make it run correctly.

On my guzzi, as most, the balance pipe section rots away so you replace it with two bits straight pipe - but thats got carbs and its bloody loud anyway :)

Balance pipe..exhaust.

Triumph maintained that with the addition of the balance pipe the power increased due to reduced exhaust pulses affecting the back pressure. Some how I doubt this wisdom but the Japs also employ similar devices on some of their Vees and Twins. You will most probably find the 'quality of the engine performance in terms of useability over a long distance compromised, with this balance pipe out of the equation.

exhaust dynamics are not exactly a simple thing but in my own experience if you look at a "quality" performance exhaust like akroprovic there are small balance pipes on the headers ,I have fitted quite a few of these to past bikes i have owned they work incredibly well and i doubt they fit the balance pipes for looks alone !!!!!!!

just my small bit of input .:shoot:

Cheers guys...

It was just a thought that had been ticking away at the back of my brain for some time.:beerjug:
