Having just cleaned up the pin on the ADV's rear caliper for the third time in 2 weeks - looked like it hadn't been touched in months - it occurs to me that no amount of emery cloth and copper grease is going to be effective on salt-encrusted roads.

I did a search for SS caliper pins on the site, but drew a blank (I think Vern posted that he was working on some, but it wasn't mentioned again). I rang Motorworks, but their supplier gave up when BMW introduced several different types of caliper (introduction of EVO brakes etc). Motobins reckon they'll probably have some in in a month or so (after the salt has gone:P).

Anybody know of anywhere else I might try? It's the rear one which is worst - it's the type which is fixed in with a circlip (my bike's a 2002 non-ABS, non-servo ADV).

They look like the kind of thing an engineering shop could knock up quite quickly and cheaply - I'm really surprised no-one seems to have picked up the ball on this one...

Im after a set as well.
Maybe if we keep this thread on the top of the pile, some enterprising engineer will get the message.

I will pre- empt the next post from the safety nazis.

What about safety ?
Will they affect my warranty ?
Will my insurance be valid ?
What if my dog licks them ?
Will they lay low the mountains of the world ?

Dont care ..... I still want them

Have you tried looking outside the traditional BMW circle of suppliers? The calipers are standard Brembo items, aren't they? So maybe someone totally unconnected with BMW can supply some ...

keith shaw engineering in toton Nottingham.me duck.
0115 972 7847 makes and supplies stainless fastners.
He has advertised in the Bmw club for years.
:)

Ive a mate who turns out S/S cotter pins on his lathe, ill see if he can do some caliper pins.

Spoke to the mate in question, doesnt think it should be to much of a problem. Ive pulled the pin out of my caliper (yes it was horrible and grotty) i'll drop it in to him tonight, to see what he can come up with. Only thing i can see being a problem is the little collar at the end of the O/E pin I assume this is to stop the pin from corroding into place.

A straight S/S pin should do the job.

Ive got a R1100GS with stock brakes dont know if other models use different calipers ?

You don't need anything flash to make these pins.I made mine out of some surgical stainless I had knocking about, and the only mod I made was another small hole in the end so I could lockwire the split pin in.
If enough people want them,I can get a batch made at cost if Stefs mate can't do them
