Standard GS1200 vs Adventure

So many responses.. so many opinions.. thanks guys - really interesting stuff! I reckon I'm duty bound to arrange a test ride and find out for myself which I'm going to do next week.

Maybe I'm wide of the mark here but what I quite like about the standard bike is that it doesn't stand out that much compared to the Adventure and therefore doesn't make a 'statement'. I'm planning a solo trip to Jordan (country not slappa) later this year for a couple of months (my first biking trip abroad!) and am keen to blend in best as poss rather than look like a hardcore traveller and am therefore wonder whether an Adventure carries more of a 'presence' attracting more attention etc? I'm not saying that's bad but there's no getting away from the fact that the Adventure looks like it's had a good dose of steroids!!

Thanks again for all the comments.

You'll stand out on a GS as much as a GSA, it's still a huge bike and still has a BMW badge on it. No one ever bought a GS/GSA to blend in.

I'm thinking of getting a Smart for around town, so that must absolutely prove to Mr "ElephantMan" that I am smaller than he in all important respects.

I have a horrifying image of him now with two dobermans, a combat jacket and a subscription to Soldier of Fortune, sneering at all of us metrosexuals with our weedy (but faster) GSs.

Are you stalking me?,how do you know so much?,f**k it they're only bikes and i'm only playing devils advocate, sorry it has taken so long to reply-its been sunny and i've been riding my GSA {no bells,no whistles, just bike}and as for what car you drive who cares?good for you and your smart I wanted the wife to get one but she liked the 500 more

I'd love a 1200GSA, they weren't invented when I bought my 1200GS.......

But I love having the £5000 I would need to trade-up staying in my bank account even more. It's a lot of petrol/tyres/fun after all, and I can't ride for more than a tankfull on the GS before I need to stop for a piss anyway.:nenau

Thanks for all the opinions. I test rode an Adventure today and have to say it was an hour well spent!

First impression was that it definately felt a bigger more substantial bike - height of seat/extra wide tank/taller windscreen. Once I got going though it did feel a lot more sure footed then my standard GS. I didn't find the extra weight (3/4 full of fuel) or size a downside at all, in fact I liked the way the bike seemed to 'flow' around the bends. The windscreen definately gave a lot more wind protection as did the wider tank to the legs. It also seemed more steady at lower speeds when creeping through traffic. I was also impressed with the raised riding position which feels 'more commanding'. Crash bars, aluminium luggage, longer range and the overall look means I'm seriously thinking of changing.

Downsize is the cheapest one the local dealer has (a 2006) is my bike (2004) plus £3500 or my bike plus about £7000 for a fully loaded brand new model !

Whilst the standard bike I own is a great bike and I do enjoy riding it in my opinion the Adventure IS a better all round bike - it's just HOW much better it is and what the bike is going to be used for i.e. commuting/touring.

Money aside - I'd swap!

Good on you, trade that bitch:ymca bike in and get the daddy :thumb2 treat yourself to the new one, whats 7k? f-all

IF YOU CHANGE A PRE 08 GS YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GSA BECOUSE THE TANK IS THE SAME SHAPE AND THE TANK BAG STILL FITS . sAVED £150.00

I traded my 06 GS for a new GSA last October.

I found the sheer size a bit daunting at first, and was somewhat initimidated when pushing it around, in and out of the garage, with a full fuel tank. But you soon get used to that and the advantages of better wind protection and the bike feeling a bit more planted were great.

Basically it's a GS that prefers to use the weights rather than a GS that likes to run on the treadmill.

I bought the GSA because I really liked it and that is what I wanted to spend my money on. It's an ugly f*cker but I love it.

That's all.
