STANDING ON YOUR PEGS

Can anyone tell me if its ilegal or not to ride my bike on the roads anywhere and everywhere standing up on my pegz?

Is it Legal, or is it a criminal offence (I dont mean a cardinal sin) can I be pulled over for it by the police? (I dont mean the tosser or fashion police)

should I be looking for a policeman or is it perfectly legal

Can't imagine any reason why it would not be... the only thing might be a marginal not having full control of the vehicle - but as we all know standing brings down the centre of gravity.

If your head was pointing down not up then maybe for due care and attention.. but if you are riding stood up, not making silly faces, not shaking your ass at people what could you be done for?

Apart from what the Tarquine one says I believe there are a couple of previous posts where the plod have stopped and warned people that they are not considered to be in full control of their vehicle in such a position - especially if riding in the urban environment.

When doing advanced training I was taught to stand on the pegs if it would give improved visibility to make overtakes safer on an undulating road and by giving a clearer view beyond the target vehicle.

It works, changing a marginal into a definite almost immediately. You do need to be confident doing a shoulder check as you are sitting down and initiating the manouvre. Falling off would kind of negate the benefit

Ride around the speedbumps or take to the grass verge..................then once on the grass, then you can stand on the pegs and look like an offroad demi-god

Interesting from packer and oony must be right I mean a roll side to side or one leg lift would be an imbalance

I thought some one even old bill might say you cant use your mirrors up there, I understand people thinking why would you well I might choose to sometimes! for what ever reason takes my fancy now and again when no one is looking

maybe its down to the discretion of the traffic officer

I think the bottom line is you can't do an emergency stop, standing up on the pegs, however you will get a rousing cheer at any UKGser event if you ride into the campsite/hotel carpark "on the pegs"...

Standing on Pegs

The wrong Copper on a bad day and you would virtually be guaranteed a prosecution. He/She would have to specify the actual offence, there are several, and you would have to decide to plead guilty and cough up or fight it. Magistrates are very inconsistent but the probable outcome would be 3/6 points and a fine.

Get the right Copper and you would get away with a bollocking!!

Bottom line: 'Do so at your peril'.

During the BMW off road training at Hechlingen they had us deliberately locking up the rear wheel at about 70kph and controlling the skid by shifting body weight while standing. The instructor demonstrated, and we tried the same, while seated and it's nigh on impossible to control the back wheel lock up effectively while seated. You have much more control in this situation while standing because of the change to the centre of gravity and the ability to shift your weight, use your knees and influence the skid..... but I doubt a 19 year old spotty traffic PC would be much interested in that point of view
