i have got it back in the bike and tryed to start it but the starter cog just spins and does not engage to the fly wheel.

does mean my solenoid is f>cked and i need to get a new one?
as i have 2 solenoid and both dont seem to make it work

help is needed

Sounds like the flywheel needs turning slightly to help the starter engage.
Make sure your battery is charged - low and it may not have enough power to fling the bendix correctly
Failing that it may be the S/M needs cleaning or re-checking

battery is new.
will try and move the flywheel round a bit and see.
was thinking of investing in a recondition one from moto works

from probs i've had in the past, i reckon the starter is probably engaging, but the clutch (just behind the pinion) is slipping. it used to be a replaceable part but i hav'nt done one for years:nenau

i will try tonight and see about moving the flywheel round a bit and seeing if that would help.
the clutch has allways been stuff on the bike since i got it 5years ago.

going to give both of my starter motors to my wifes dad and se if he can give me one good one out of them both

That sounds like a good plan :thumb2 they are fairly simple but too complex for me to try to explain on the internet :D if you do need any parts they share virtually all components with a valeo D6RA. you should be able to get one from any car scrap yard for £20 or less. The only part they dont share is the nose casting. The D6RA starter is found on many small engined Citroens, Renaults, vauxhals and Peugeots if you do a search in this section you will find a couple of threads that have a better list of cars with suitable donors :thumb2 If you get really desperate you could send me all the bits and I will fix it and post it back to you :thumb2:thumb2 (should only cost postage)
