hi all

i am in need of some info.
how do i bench test a starter motor?

do i just clip the + cable from a battery to the bolt on the botton of the starter were the 2 wires bolt on to? then just push the - cable on to the starter to make it turn over?

is that right?
as i need to check if my spare starter works before i fit it in my bike.

thanks for the help/

nope

+VE Lead to Upper starter solenoid stud (not the one with the lead disappearing into the starter body)

-ve clamp onto a mount point and If you can get a little bit of wire with a spade terminal on it it put it on the spade on the solenoid

HOLD THE STARTER FIRMLY and firmly touch the little wire to the +ve battery lead

The starter will jump with the inertia Hence the Hold Starter FIRMLY and the starter gear should travel out and return smoothly once you remove the wire

Connect to battery with jump leads. Negative to starter casing and positive to main voltage terminal. To actvate starter connect across from main voltage terminal to starter trigger terminal with a short length of wire or a screwdriver.

The solenoid is in effect a large relay which is energised when power is supplied to the trigger.

The starter should give a good sharp jump when it starts up, then press the gear teeth as hard as you can against the corner of a timber plank - it should dig in a cut the timber without noticeably slowing down.

the starter works so next on the list is to fit the spare to the bike and the strip down and clean the other one.
