Hi folks,

The starter on my bumble sounds quite asthmatic, but it does start the bike ok. Is this likely to mean I need new brushes? As it is an early Para it looks like it will be the Bosch starter, but I have not had a look yet. Motorworks state that I need to do some soldering and I am the world's worst solderer.

The list gets longer and longer of jobs I have to do. Anyone want to make me an offer on the bumble as it stands with newish shock, new battery, stainless fastener kit, exhaust downpipes and y piece? Hmm just kidding (I think). :rob

Cheers,

Matt

I have an early para ie 88 R100GS. Mine had a Valeo starter.

If it is a Valeo, you don't need to take the front cover off either to get at one of the mounting bolts mentioned in the Clymer manual. The Clymer is for the Bosch :blast

From memory, the LH bolt as you look at the starter looking towards the front wheel was a right tw@t for access if it's a normal bolt head. A ground down socket would be helpfull. I ended up taking the airbox lower bit off to get enough access. Used stainless allen head bolts on the refit. Nice and easy now :)

Removing and refurbishing the Valeo starter is not at all difficult and as John has pointed out, the access isn't brilliant. When I did mine, I simply replaced the mounting bolts but Allen bolts would have been better. Is it the brushes? Perhaps but one or more of the magnets may well have become unglued. If you've ridden it for a while like that, the the magnets, which are made from carbon, will be broken into pieces.

Look in 'Search' as there's loads of advice on these starters.

I have removed the starter this evening (a lot easier than I feared), so I guess the next stage is to take it apart and have a peek to see what is going on.

If the magnets are shot, can I get a replacement casing from somewhere just to do a straight swap? I really don't fancy the drilling and screwing method of attaching the magnets.

Thanks again for your help.

Be very careful when handling the brush holder - its very brittle.

I have tried drilling these magnets :augie

It is not a easy job at all - and I have good kit in me shed
Re Glueing is definately possible you will need a two part Locktite type product and be very clean
Thats if yer magnets have just rotated and not been damaged too much
The brush holders are the easyist thing to brake on the bike - be carefull when re- assembling

Hi chaps,

It turns out that the magnets were fine, and the problem was with a worn bearing. This was replaced during a full overhaul at a local auto electrical place including new connectors etc, and I will fit later to see how it goes.
