Starter motor does not engage

I have problem to start my 1150 GS YM 02 and need some advice how to fault trace.
When turning the ignition switch on, the fuel pump starts and builds up pressure.
Gear selector in neutral, side stand in driving position but, when pushing the start button, nothing happens.
The starter motor does not even try to engage.

I suspect it is an electrical problem.
The battery is in good shape and I have not had any problem before.
I parked the bike last Friday and now it will not start.

How should I fault trace?
What could be the problem?
I appreciate all help I can get.

Starter motor does not engage

Do you mean that the starter motor spins but doesn't turn the engine over or do you mean that the starter motor doesn't spin?

What checks have you made?

Greg

does the relay click loudly when you push the starter btton? does the head light work and the horn works? almost certainly battery. Stick it on charge for a couple of hours then try it.

Does your clock reset when when you press the starter? If so, the starter motor may be stuck. It's a simple job to remove it and grease the shaft.

Sounds like your start relay is knackered....
You can take it apart and have a look/clean the contacts.
The very same happened my bike and this sorted it.

It could be something as simple as the solenoid trigger lead dropped off its tag.

Yes, this could be the case. One way to test this is with the ignition on, bike in neutral, remove the start relay, and with a piece of jumper wire, connect the two terminals on the relay receptacle for the primary contacts. (There is a little diagram on the side of the relay to show you the correct ones) If the starter engages, then you know that everything downstream of that is good. Be sure to pull out the jumper wire very quickly or the starter will stay engaged!........

I have not done so much yet.
It has been raining and I do not have my garage close to the flat there the bike is parked.

I shall try to express myself more clearly:
When ignition on, the fuel pump priming.
When pushing the starter button nothings happen at all.
- No click sound from the relay
- No sign of voltage drop

Thanks for the hints. :thumb2
I will try to jump the starter relay as the first step.
What I am worried about is that there need to be a bunch of conditions fulfilled before the engine allows the starter motor to run.
If so, it will take some time to find the problem or that the engine control unit is broken.

I will post the findings.
Hopefully, I will have the possibility to put some time on the bike before the weekend.

Fuses checked and all ok.

Starter relay engage when applying 12 V.
86/86b connected to ground.
12+ OK.

The bike starts if starter motor solenoid engaged with an external control signal.

The killer switch seems to be ok.
When used, the instrument shut down.

What I understand, the problem is no control signal to the start relay.
Did not have the time to remove the tank but will do it soon.

I do not know if I have understood the wiring diagram completely
+12V to the killer switch and then to the start button and the motor tronic/fuel pump.
Since the engine runs when jumping the starter motor, is it enough to check the wiring between killer switch/start button/start relay?
Is it easy to find X9481 solder point?

I have some wiring diagram for 1100 and 1150.

Email me if you woulf find them usefull ;)

Thanks for the support.

At last, I found some time to spend on fault tracing.
I found that the start button causes the problem.

Is it possible to replace the button or do I need to replace the whole assembly?
Who is the supplier of the switch?
Cannot find any name.

Try Motorworks for a second hand one, link on top of page here. I got a second hand L/H switch cluster off them quite cheap, as the new ones are very expensive...
