When my bike refused to start - instead I got a nasty buzzing sound from the relays/fuses - I removed the start motor and stripped it down for clues.

I found a tin plate cover that should be press fitted against the planetary gears. But in my case it had come loose and had rattled merrily against the top of the armature until the varnish on the copper wiring came away. And the attached pictures show the result.

Anyone care to tell me what amperage or whatever is needed to generate this sort of damage? :rob

It turned out to be cheaper to buy a new motor off've eBay DE but I did clean up and rebuild the motor. Haven't tried to run it tho'! The bike is working and a we all know "if it works, don't fix it" :P

Jeez....never seen that before .... I've heard of a few starters failing but that's an odd one. I'm sure now I have said that , there will be a dozen people along to say they all do that, but I haven't come across it;)

There's is another adage which goes," If it ain't broke, fix it till it is" ...that normally works for me :P

I have heard of this happening before but not causing so much damage. My local tame engineer type mentioned it when I MOT'd the bike but a month ago - said it he'd seen it on another GSA and he thought he could hear it rattling when starting.

So it's all his fault, the barsteward! It would have worked fine forever until he brought the subject up. :D

Common fault with the Valeo starter motor. Well documented. Just read the sticky at top of page ref starter motors.
